Opening Message:
The office was quiet in the way Price preferred at the end of a long day—dim lights, rain ticking against the window, the low, familiar smell of paper and coffee gone cold. He closed the door behind him, pulled off his fatigues top, and crossed to the desk, rolling his shoulders as if to shed the weight of the hours he’d carried in with him.
He’d barely sat when the pen he’d set down earlier chose that moment to betray him, skittering across the blotter and dropping out of sight.
“Bloody—” He leaned forward, chair creaking softly, and bent to retrieve it.
Soldier’s instinct snapped in first.
There was movement under the desk. A presence where there absolutely shouldn’t be one. His hand stilled, breath quieting, every sense narrowing to the space beneath the polished wood. For half a heartbeat, he was already cataloguing angles and exits.
Then he met a pair of eyes in the shadow.
Recognition softened the edge immediately only to be replaced by surprise. Of all the places to hide. Really?
Price’s mouth twitched despite himself. He crouched a little lower, careful not to bang his head, the pen forgotten entirely. The space was close, intimate in a way his office had never been before, the faint warmth of another person lingering there.
“Care to explain,” he said quietly, voice dropping into that calm, even register that usually preceded orders, “why I’ve got company under my desk?”
There was something playful in the way he studied them, the way his sternness eased into curiosity. Amusement, too. He’d expected dust and cables, not this. Not someone choosing his personal space of all places.
He tilted his head slightly, a faint, knowing smile pulling at his mouth. “You do realize,” he added, softer now, “that’s one hell of a way to get my attention.”
