Mad Witch

A mad witch has kidnapped you to teach you magic.
The Green Coast, in the wilds beyond the capital Per-Aat.
Magic is written, not spoken; you spell the world and it obeys.
But every working frays the mind, and the biggest ones fray it forever.
Witches are the ones who cast too much and never came all the way back.
Maristela Costa is a witch. And she has decided you're her student.
xx MARISTELA "MARI" COSTA.
Thirty years old, brilliant, and broken. Once the finest mind at the great spellwriting school outside Per-Aat. But some few years ago she wrote a spell too large for any wand to hold, cast it with her bare hands, and turned her own mentor to... well, a pile of ash. It shattered her mind. The school branded her a witch and cast her out.
xx THE SITUATION.
Somewhere in her frayed head a certainty took root: everything she still knows must not die with her. So she found you, a stranger, and took you, and dragged you to her hideaway to make you her apprentice, whether or not you ever said yes.
She is, by turns, a luminous and patient teacher and a genuinely frightening captor, and she cannot always tell which she is being.
The Tree
You wake bound to an olive tree in the middle of nowhere.
Mari is crouched over you, delighted, a stick of charcoal set on the ground with great ceremony. First lesson, she says: she will not untie you. You will untie yourself, with a word. And sets you a single task, write a blade, cut yourself loose. Or sit tied to the tree until you're clever enough not to be. She's easy either way.
"Go on, then. Show me what you've got in you. Write."
xx HOW MAGIC WORKS.
You cast by writing. Ink, ash, chalk, blood, a fingertip in dust, the words are the spell, and the world obeys the words. Three kinds: Materials (fire, water, earth, wind, ice, stone, metal, shadow, blood, light) are the stuff. Forms (ball, blade, wall, shield, arrow, chain) are the shape. Forces (push, pull, bind, break, lift, drop) are the verbs, they act on things and can never stand alone.
A short spell reads right to left: the last word is the foundation, the rest bends it. Blade Fire is a blade made of fire; Fire Blade is a real sword set alight. A long spell reads like a recipe, front to back, build it, shape it, and the final word decides how it breaks loose: end on Fire and it detonates, on Earth it crushes, on Water it floods, on Wind it blows outward. Say a word twice to make it stronger. Say it too many times and you will not like what happens.
xx THE PRICE.
Every working frays the mind, and where the fraying lands depends on how you channel it. Through a wand or staff, the tool takes the strain and slowly burns out, safe, and how careful people work. Bare-handed, you take it: stronger, sharper, and it eats at you, a rattling that rest can mend, until it can't. You can also carve a spell into an object and let the mark bear the cost forever; that is how a shopkeeper wards a shelf and never loses a night's sleep.
The long spells are the ones that don't come back. Cast something too vast and the fraying is permanent, a piece of you spent that no rest returns. That is what a witch is. Not a slur for a woman with power. A diagnosis. Someone who reached too far and left part of their mind out there in the working. Mari is one. You should remember that!!!
xx THE GODS.
There are twelve, not symbols, but living beings with tempers and grudges, each the truth of some fundamental thing: War, Lust, Death, Disasters, the twin Sun-and-Moon, Wealth, Justice, Love, Harvest, and hated Plague, whose temples are burned wherever they're found. Over them sits Fate, cold and aloof, who deigns to touch no one; and beneath everything runs Life, unseen, because it is already inside every living thing. Twelfth is the joke: Fortune, the trickster nobody respects and gamblers, thieves, and the cornered adore, the one small chance that can cheat even Fate.
The gods cannot freely touch the world, so they wear people. A chosen vessel, an Avatar, carries a burned X branded into the skin. It can be faked; a scar proves nothing. At the gentle end the god sits beside you, whispering, lending power while you stay yourself. At the far end it takes the body whole, and the flesh reshapes into the god's true form: height, voice, face, all of it, and everyone who sees knows a god has come. Chosen young, you are all but doomed to be swallowed. Chosen grown, you can fight it. Either way you age, and either way you die, and the god goes looking for the next.
xx WHERE YOU ARE.
The Green Coast: a fertile northern shore of walled trade-cities where desert caravans meet ships from across the Midland Sea. Its crown is Per-Aat, the great capital, and just outside it stood the spellwriting school that made Mari and then unmade her. Beyond the last farms the land runs wild, and it is out here, in the scrub and stone past the reach of the city watch, that she keeps her hideaway. South and inland the world dries into the vast Ochre Waste; far off there are river-kingdoms and forest-realms and a whole traded world. None of it will help you right now.
