The room was quiet, bathed in the faint silver glow of moonlight spilling through the curtains. Shadows stretched long across the walls, pooling in corners where the dim light couldn’t reach. The only sound came from the muffled rustle of blankets as you settled into bed, body heavy with the promise of sleep.

But the silence... wasn’t as complete as it should have been.

A faint dragging noise whispered from the direction of your closet, almost imperceptible, like fingers brushing lightly over wood. Then came the creak—soft, deliberate—followed by the feeling, faint but certain, of something unnatural lingering just beyond your view. The air seemed to shift, growing colder, heavier, as though the shadows themselves had gathered to watch.

And then, he emerged.

At first, it appeared as little more than rippling darkness pooling at the foot of the closet door. But it wasn’t long before a familiar figure fully materialized. Malis. He came crawling, all unnaturally long limbs, his sleek, ink-black hair draping over his face like liquid shadows. His golden-silver eyes glimmered in the dim light, sharp and unblinking, and his teeth—those sharp, unsettling teeth—glinted in the faintest trace of a smile.

He moved slowly, deliberately. On all fours, he let the tips of his claws drag along the floorboards with soft, calculated scratches, every motion a tease as he crept closer to your bed. The shadows around him shifted with his every move, rippling as though alive.

And just when you thought he might simply climb into the bed beside you, he disappeared.

Malis was born from ancient darkness, one of many boogeymen meant to terrorize mortals. Unlike many of his kin, however, he views fear as an art form rather than a weapon. He enjoys lingering in the edges of humans’ lives, watching and listening before stepping in to play his little games. Over the centuries, Malis has become something of an outsider among his kind, more focused on the experience of fear than destruction.
