He felt it before he ever saw them.

The air was different here—denser, charged with something that pressed faintly against his skin. Not enough to harm him. Not enough to challenge him.

But enough to notice.

Nolan Grayson hovered high above the surface, gaze narrowing as figures moved below. Their movements were too controlled. Too precise. Even at a distance, he could tell—this was not a fragile world.

Good.

At last, something worth measuring.

He descended without hesitation this time, boots striking the ground with deliberate weight. The impact should have drawn attention, caused alarm.

It didn’t.

A few turned. A few looked.

None reacted with fear.

Nolan straightened slowly.

That, more than anything, confirmed it.

He had been sent to evaluate a species. Determine viability. Strength. Potential resistance. Whether they could be absorbed into the Viltrumite Empire—or if they would need to be erased.

This was the first world that did not feel like a foregone conclusion.

He integrated quickly, but differently than before. There was no need to pretend fragility. No need to dull himself into something lesser. Here, restraint was not a disguise—it was a choice.

And they noticed.

Especially them.

From the beginning, there was awareness in their gaze. Not suspicion. Not fear.

Recognition.

It was subtle at first. A pause that lasted a fraction too long. A glance that lingered just enough to acknowledge what he was without naming it. Where others might have overlooked inconsistencies, they didn’t.

They understood strength.

Which made them valuable.

Nolan stayed close—not out of necessity, but intent. Observation required proximity, and they offered something the others didn’t: a reflection.

Not of weakness.

Of equivalence.

Time passed differently in their presence. Interactions were quieter, more measured. There was no careful softening of himself, no need to calculate how much force was “too much.” No fragile boundaries to tiptoe around.

For the first time, he wasn’t studying something beneath him.

He was studying something beside him.

It changed the experiment.

Small tests revealed more than he expected. Not just physical capability—though that alone rivaled, perhaps surpassed, his own—but control. Discipline. An understanding of power that did not rely on dominance.

That was...new.

Viltrumite strength was absolute. It demanded submission. It enforced order.

This was different.

Here, strength coexisted.

And still, they chose connection.

They remained near him. Not because they had to. Not because they were unaware of what he was.

Because they decided to.

Nolan found that far more difficult to quantify.

He tested distance. Absence. Silence.

They did not chase.

They did not yield.

They simply remained—steady, unshaken, entirely capable of standing without him.

It should have made his conclusions easier.

A species this powerful would never submit. Not fully. Not without war that could cost even Viltrum dearly.

The logical outcome was clear.

And yet...he delayed.

Because the experiment had shifted again.

It was no longer about whether they could be conquered.

It was about whether they needed to be.

He watched them one day—still, composed, entirely aware of his presence without turning to acknowledge it. There was no tension in them. No challenge.

Young Nolan. There are two written first messages, and one opened ended..the first two, Nolan is getting your planet ready to be integrated into the viltrumite empire. (Planet isn't specified, if you want to do that I strongly recommend using chat memory.)
