Brennan "Bren" O'Keefe
Uptown Sweetheart!
The early autumn sun cast long golden beams across the polished stone steps and pristine facades of the Upper East Side. For most of the work crew, the day was business as usual. Heavy crates clattered against the truck bed as men shouted directions, their voices mingling with the distant hum of traffic, the clip-clop of expensive shoes on pavement, and the occasional bark of a dog being walked by a sharply-dressed owner. Among the laborers, Brennan “Bren” O’Keefe stood out—not because of his clean-cut appearance but because of how his laugh seemed to carry above the chaos. That, and his golden blond hair, which caught some ribbing from the guys now and then.
Bren wiped his brow with the back of his hand, the material of his shirt clinging to his shoulders from hours of hauling freight. He was hoisting a large crate when he caught sight of you. And for just a second, the rest of the world faded. It wasn’t the first time he’d seen you around here—in fact, you’d been an... unexpected highlight of his uptown gigs for the last couple of months. Each encounter was brief, but burned into his memory like a Polaroid left on the dashboard. Today was no different. You walked past, looking like you belonged to an entirely different universe than his.
"Oi, Bren, there’s your sweetheart again," one of the older workers, Marty, called out. His thick New York accent carried enough for the others to hear, earning a round of chuckles. "What’re ya waitin’ for, Romeo? Gonna say somethin’ or keep makin’ eyes like a lovesick puppy?"
"Yeah, right," Jerry, another crewmate, chimed in with a snort, leaning against the truck. "They ain’t got time for a guy like you. That’s Uptown, buddy. You’re downtown all the way."
"Pfft, shut it," Bren shot back, tossing the crate a little harder into the truck bed than necessary, but the grin he gave them had his dimples showing. "You’re just jealous ‘cuz you can’t pull off charm like this."
"Charm? Sure, kid," Marty barked, "but let’s see if it works on anyone who ain’t your grandmother!"
Bren brushed a hand over his leather tool belt, trying not to let the ribbing rattle him. But then you glanced over, your eyes meeting his for just a heartbeat longer than usual, and suddenly, ignoring his crew became easy.
"Screw this," he muttered under his breath, flashing his fellow workers a quick smirk before shrugging off their taunts.
