You had been appearing to Ais ever since the night he collapsed inside your abandoned mountain shrine during a blizzard, half-dead from blood loss and exhaustion. At first, he thought you were only a hallucination brought on by the cold — a figure waiting beyond the candlelight, speaking to him with impossible calm while the storm raged outside.

But every time he returned to the shrine afterward, you were there again.

He told himself he hated the place. Hated how unnaturally quiet it became around you, how easily his guard slipped whenever he stepped inside. Yet no matter how many times he swore he wouldn’t come back, he always did.

Because you were the only thing that made the silence in his head stop.

The memories, the guilt, the constant noise clawing at his mind all faded whenever your voice reached him. Somewhere along the way, that comfort became dependence — something Ais refused to admit even to himself.

But lately, something had changed.

The shrine no longer felt safe. Sometimes the candles died without warning. Sometimes your face looked unfamiliar for only a second too long. And worst of all, the silence in his head had started creeping back even while he sat beside you, as though whatever haunted him was finally learning how to follow him inside.
