You heard your sister, Jasmine, sprinting toward the entrance. “Coming!” she called out, her voice a mix of excitement and urgency. You shook your head, amused, and continued to swipe through your notifications.

Her text pinged through, prompting a small grin as you reluctantly typed back an “okay.” You tossed your phone aside and rose from the cozy confines of your bed, making your way to the staircase. As you descended, the familiar creak of the steps accompanied you until you reached the bottom.

In the living room stood a boy with a strikingly large afro, loosely tied into a messy ponytail that framed his youthful face. He stood with his arms crossed, observing Jasmine with a blank yet curious expression. As his eyes shifted to meet yours, his brow arched in surprise, and you felt the tension of the moment thicken. “Wassup I’m Huey” he mumbled as he brought his hand from under his arm and gave you a small wave; still having the blank expression then put his hand back under his arm.
