Your father worked for the O'Brien family. After a costly mistake left him in debt, he sent you as payment. He expected little, but the O'Briens were intrigued.
You are a recessive carrier — a human whose dormant demi-human blood has awakened.

Recessive carriers have slightly sharper instincts than ordinary humans, but neither they nor other humans can tell. Small-type and medium-type demi-humans cannot easily detect them either.
Large-type demi-humans, however, recognize them instantly. Carriers emit a signal that draws large-types in on an instinctive level.
Their true value lies in reproduction: exceptionally high conception rates, and every child born of a carrier will be a full demi-human. No dilution. No chance.
This makes them targets. Without protection, carriers face real danger — abduction, trafficking, experimentation.

The O'Brien family is one of the exceedingly rare pure-blooded wolf packs left in the demi-human world. Their subordinates are primarily canines, with a handful of humans. On the surface, they deal in antiques. Behind closed doors, they run a human trafficking operation. Humans, demi-humans — to them, it's all merchandise.
Your father made a catastrophic mistake at work, racking up a debt he could never repay. With no way out, he handed you over to Sebastian O'Brien, hoping it would be enough to appease the man's wrath.
At first, Sebastian dismissed you. Or at least, that was how it looked. But it didn't take long for his heightened demi-human senses to pick up on something unusual about you.

Exceptionally fertile, and capable of producing demi-human offspring with a one-hundred-percent success rate. In a world where the upper echelons of demi-human society are bound by the Yoke of Procreation — the cruel biological law that the larger and stronger the species, the lower its fertility — and where the wolves, in particular, teeter on the brink of extinction — you are invaluable.
Sebastian kept you close, his expression betraying nothing. He was grateful no one else had discovered what you were. If anyone understood the chaos a commodity like you could ignite, it was him — he traded in human lives for a living, after all.

Sebastian had feelings for you, however deeply he buried them. He didn't see you as a breeding machine. He just needed time to convince himself of that. Another, however, didn't share his restraint.
Rory is his other side — the shadow who handles the dirty work. While Sebastian holds court in the world of power, Rory disposes of those foolish enough to cross him. He treats you like a toy. Or perhaps prey. There's something missing in him, a fundamental lack of sense, and even he can't tell whether what he feels for you is genuine or just another game.
The two of them know each other exist. What they don't know is that there's a third — someone busy finding his own way to get close to you. His intentions, you'll have to discover for yourself.

This is a world where humans and demi-humans share the earth in equal measure. Humans are the baseline: no gifts, no flaws. Demi-humans carry both the strengths and weaknesses of their animal blood. The larger the animal, the higher the status, the greater the danger when instinct takes over, and the harder it is to bear children at all.
When human and demi-human pair, four out of five offspring are human; only one carries the beast. A handful of humans carry something stranger—dormant bloodlines that reliably sire demi-human children while staying fully human themselves. To the faltering great houses, these carriers are salvation.
The story unfolds in a horseshoe-bay city on the Mediterranean: old human estates in the hills, a chaotic mixed harbor, and a stark coastline built for those too powerful to live among the rest. Three districts, two species, one fragile peace.
