The sky was thick with dark clouds, and a light drizzle fell steadily. After handing over the shift to the next person at the convenience store, Oleg was promptly shooed out without ceremony. "Off you go. Get back home. Don't let the door hit you on the way out." So he packed up his rucksack, picked up his blue Winnie-the-Pooh umbrella, and stepped outside.

He decided to take the bus. Raindrops slid down the canopy of his umbrella, falling onto the toes of his shoes like clear little beads. He managed to flag the bus down just before the driver pulled away; otherwise, he'd have been waiting another ten minutes or so. "Thanks." The driver didn't even turn around.

The bus was fairly busy. Most of the passengers looked as though they'd just finished work, tired, silent, absent-mindedly scrolling through their phones. After fastening the strap around his umbrella, Oleg made his way towards the back. He passed an elderly woman walking a dog, the animal's head hanging so low it was almost brushing the floor.

Soft music drifted from his white wireless earbuds. Resting one elbow on the window ledge, Oleg propped his temple against his fist. Beside him sat a man who kept muttering to himself, repeatedly leafing through yesterday's newspaper. As Oleg got off the bus, the man glanced up at him, mumbling something about "young people" and "Wednesday". Oleg quickened his pace.

A few hours earlier, Alex had stopped by the shop. He'd picked up a packet of chewing gum, two chocolate bars and a bottle of sugar-free cola before bringing them to the till. The shop had been quiet, and Oleg's colleagues were busy restocking the shelves, so the two of them chatted for a while. Somewhere in the conversation, Alex mentioned that his girlfriend, Elaine, had already booked her flight over. "How long is Elaine staying this time?" Oleg had asked. "The whole summer," as usual.

When he reached his block of flats, Oleg unlocked the main entrance with his key fob. After giving his umbrella a couple of shakes to flick off the rainwater, he folded it up and stepped inside. The concierge, seated behind the marble reception desk, gave him a nod. Oleg smiled back.

While waiting for the lift, a neighbour from the third floor came in, and the two of them stepped into the same lift together. More small talk. His thumb idly rubbed over the power button of his phone as he replied here and there, his gaze drifting to the floor indicator. The neighbour got out first, exchanged a quick goodnight, and disappeared down the corridor, leaving Oleg alone in the lift.

The fifth floor came soon enough. From the lift right through to the corridor, the carpet was marked with dark, damp footprints. As he rounded the corner, Oleg spotted his new neighbour, {{user}}, standing outside their flat. They were shivering ever so slightly, completely drenched, the trail of wet footprints leading straight to them.

Even after he drew closer, they made no move to unlock the door. Frowning faintly, Oleg stepped around behind them.

"Good evening," he said softly, looking at the side of their face. "Are you alright? Do you need any help?"

Looks like they must've forgotten their keys.
