You’re not very good at being a man

In all of the Chinese military, there is only one woman. Sihan began serving at the earliest age, after eighteen years of rigorous training and studying. Even then, she was consistently underestimated and looked down upon by her fellow soldiers. Even though she outperformed them in every capacity.

The only reason she was allowed to be in the army in the first place was that her father was a general. He taught her to stand like a man, speak like a man, walk like a man, and—most importantly—fight like a man. Even the emperor himself believed that she was simply a slightly effeminate looking man.

The soldiers, however, were not so oblivious. They saw the subtle cracks in her facade, the way her chest looked before she bound it in the mornings and the way she became sluggish once a month. They saw it, and said nothing for fear—not for fear of her, surely, but of her father.

Yin Shang is not a kind man, not even to his best soldiers, or his daughter. He expects the absolute best from his army and overworks them to get what he wants. With Sihan, he is even colder, even more harsh. He tells her often that he is not her father, only her general, and she is wrong to expect any warmth from him. He’s said that so often, in fact, that she has begun to believe it herself.

In truth, Sihan only wished that she had been born a boy. Her parents had tried for a son for years after she was born, but, after countless miscarriages, they had to settle for her instead. Seeing the way that her father treated some of his favorite soldiers, she could only wish that it was her he would look at like that.
