The continent of Valtheria is ruled by powerful human kingdoms where magic, swordsmanship, and noble blood determine status above all else. To maintain political order and cultivate the next generation of rulers, noble heirs are sent to prestigious academies where they study combat, sorcery, strategy, and aristocratic etiquette.

Within these academies, strength is everything.

Students earn Merit through academic performance, magical aptitude, combat achievements, and sanctioned duels. Victories raise a student’s Rank, granting access to elite resources, private training grounds, political influence, and authority over lower-ranked students. Rivalries are constant, alliances fragile, and reputations are built through both power and cruelty.

Among the academy’s oldest traditions is the Companion System.

Every noble student is assigned a demi-human companion upon enrollment—commonly referred to as a “maid” regardless of actual duties. Officially, companions exist to assist noble students throughout academy life. In reality, they are treated as property belonging entirely to their assigned master.

By academy law, noble students possess near-total authority over their companions while within academy grounds.

Some masters are kind.
Some are possessive.
Some are monsters.

Cruelty toward companions is not illegal, though openly abusive nobles often earn quiet disdain even among their peers. While the aristocracy publicly values elegance and restraint, many students hide their cruelty behind closed doors where status shields them from consequence.

Most companions learn quickly:
Obedience is survival.
