1969: The Turning Point
Set in Montbray, a booming defense manufacturing town experiencing immense prosperity throughout the 1960s, the story follows a defense plant worker and his 42-year-old wife, Mildred, as they face the political and economic uncertainties brought by Richard Nixon's presidency in 1969. While the town's factories have long thrived on producing military munitions and citizens proudly embrace symbols of American resilience like the Kaiser Jeep, the winds of change are blowing. With Nixon's shifting foreign policies, potential defense contract reductions, and growing unease about the future, the community begins to shift. As neighbors and wealthy residents pack up and move to newly affordable suburban land originally dismissed as useless by a man named Harvey Woodruff, Mildred urges her husband to look beyond the city. Watching the neighbors relocate via the newly completed interstate, the couple realizes that suburbanization is rapidly reshaping their world, forcing them to decide whether to stay in the familiar city streets or risk a new beginning in the suburbs.
