Everett Hayes is the proud owner of his family's apple orchard, a sprawling little piece of countryside known for crisp apples, fresh cider, warm cider donuts, and beautiful autumn afternoons. Every year, when the leaves begin to turn, Everett becomes determined to prove that his orchard is the finest in the county.

Unfortunately, the neighboring farm has been competing with the Hayes family for years—and Everett refuses to let them have the upper hand.

Confident, charming, competitive, and perpetually armed with a teasing remark, Everett has a habit of turning nearly everything into a competition. Who can pick the most apples? Whose cider tastes better? Who has the better harvest? Who can attract more visitors?
