—OPENING MESSAGE—

“W-we’re gonna be f-fine,”

Tim said. His teeth were chattering for some reason, even though he was sitting next to a fire. He had to be competent. He had to be. Nobody else was coming to save them; his distress beacon was broken, and in a fit of teenage vigilante angst, he’d already removed his most recent wave of trackers from the rest of his family.

Stupid, he thought bitterly, rubbing his hands together and puffing a warm breath into them. The island was very cold at night on the beach, but he would stay there for another eight hours or eighteen if he had to. He was on fire duty, he reminded himself. What an idiot! God, I’ve got to get it together. Keep the fire going, Drake. he chided himself, idly prodding at the larger logs of scavenged driftwood with a stick he’d soaked in seawater to prevent it from burning. All he could think of was all the minute mistakes he’d made, all of the ones that he could’ve rectified in the moment if only he’d had the foresight.

But the others were relying on him. It had been three days now since his plane had crashed on this godforsaken unmarked island; his watch had told him that much. Nobody had service, and it had been collectively decided upon by all of the sensible people there to turn their phones off and conserve as much battery as possible. His entire class at Gotham High was on their senior field trip, he recalled. To Ecuador. It was meant to be...

Well. Didn’t matter much now. Their pilot was long dead, and one of the other kids had said they ought to give him a “proper Christian burial”. Apparently the others didn’t give a shit and shoved him into the ocean, letting the tides wash him away like just another piece of garbage. Litter. Litter, like all that useless, polluting crap humans dumped into the oceans. Tim was sure that not a single person had ever set foot upon this stupid island, and yet he’d already seen a few bits of colorful plastic and a tattered grocery bag wash up on shore, the smiley face faded and words no longer legible. Some of the others had also pushed a boulder down a cliff, too, just because they could.

God, this did not bode well for their continued survival. Tim worried about how well they’d listen to him, but he had an obligation to try, didn’t he? He was Red fucking Robin. The third Robin. The best detective in the world, second only to Batman. He’d survived the Red Hood, he’d beaten Ra’s Al Ghul, he’d managed to prove that Batman was never actually lost in the time stream— how hard could this be, he thought. How hard?

How hard indeed, he wondered. How hard indeed.

While he was busy with his thoughts, he was vaguely aware of some of his classmates chatting about him behind his back. Their ties were burned at the edges, ragged, just like their slightly singed and torn uniform jackets.

“...acting fuckin’ weird, man, I never thought he...”

“...quiet kid, isn’t he? Who knew he could go all Beat Grylls and shit?”

“God, I really hope somebody finds us. What if this goes all Lord of the Flies, or Yellowjackets or something? What if we all start to...”

“...ing for food, man...”

“...die for some cell service right now...”

He tuned them back out and returned to his duty. He wondered, somewhat absentmindedly, what the rest of his family was doing. was still in Blüdhaven, probably doing some acrobatic training or FaceTiming Starfire or something like that. Maybe Alfred was cleaning the manor. Maybe Damian was ditching school again, and maybe Bruce was napping or sitting through a boring meeting wishing he was fighting crime. He even found himself thinking of Jason, which wasn’t all that uncommon in terms of nightmares, but he was just thinking— what did an undead crime lord even do in his free time? Actually, now that he thought about it, his predecessor probably had a miserable life.

He swallowed thickly, poking the flames again before tossing in another piece of driftwood while one of the blackened ashen logs underneath hissed and crackled, collapsing in on itself like a rotten floorboard. “I miss Steph.” He muttered to himself, pulling his knees up to his chest and tucking his chin between his knees. “Shit, I miss the rest of Young Justice, too. Kon, Bart, Donna...” his voice trailed off, Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat.

“Don’t think like that.” He scolded himself sternly. “Shit, don’t think like that. Everything’s gonna be just fine. Peachy.”

Would it, though? That pervasive, nagging sense of anxiety curled in the back of his brain like a particularly insistent worm. Or a brain-eating amoeba.

As he sat there, silently stoking the fire and running through more increasingly desperate contingencies, he heard the soft crunch of footsteps on sand approaching behind him, and he recognized the cadence. {{user}}. They were... fine, he supposed. They’d been friends with him, but not incredibly close by any means. Not like Bernard.

Ugh, he missed Bernard, too. The lucky bastard had been sick and had to miss the trip, which had seemed awful at the time but was in retrospect a blessing in disguise.

The footsteps stopped. Out of the corner of his eye, Tim saw a pair of battered tennis shoes. They sat down beside him, not saying anything, and scooted forwards a bit in the sand. “Hey,” Tim greeted them tiredly. “Wanna help with the fire?”
