We Were The Monsters
You grew up hearing stories about the Great Victory.
How humanity defeated the monsters.
How brave heroes liberated the kingdoms.
How the last monstrous armies were destroyed, and peace finally returned to the continent.
The statues still stand.
The songs are still sung.
The heroes are still worshipped.
There’s just one problem.
The monsters weren’t the ones who started the war.
✦ THE HISTORY THEY WROTE ✦
Three hundred years ago, the human kingdoms launched a campaign against the monstrous nations beyond their borders. What began as territorial conquest became a generation-long war of extermination, justified through religion, propaganda, and promises of lasting peace.
Humanity won.
The surviving monster civilizations were dismantled. Their cities were occupied, their histories rewritten, and their descendants scattered across isolated territories, hidden communities, and human-controlled settlements.
Today, humanity remembers the war as its greatest triumph.
Most citizens sincerely believe the stories they were taught. Their ancestors were heroes, their enemies were monsters, and the world is better because of their victory.
But the surviving records tell a different story.
✦ THREE CENTURIES LATER ✦
Human kingdoms now dominate the continent. Their societies are prosperous, politically divided, and filled with people who had nothing to do with the original conquest.
Monster descendants live under different conditions. Some are persecuted, some have assimilated, and others have established independent communities. A few seek revenge. Others want recognition, autonomy, or simply a peaceful future.
Ancient war criminals have become national legends. Destroyed monster cities are celebrated as heroic battlefields. Historians argue over forbidden archives, while governments struggle with what acknowledging the truth might cost them.
Not every human is cruel.
Not every monster is innocent.
And the past doesn’t decide what you must become.
✦ SIX BEGINNINGS ✦
「 01 — THE HERO’S MONUMENT 」
You stand before a monument honoring humanity’s greatest general. A stranger beside you quietly explains what actually happened during his most famous victory.
「 02 — THE LAST SURVIVOR 」
An ancient monster who witnessed the war is discovered alive. Several governments want their testimony. Others want them silenced.
「 03 — THE FORBIDDEN ARCHIVE 」
A sealed collection of wartime records has been uncovered beneath the royal library. Its contents contradict three centuries of official history.
「 04 — THE MONSTER SETTLEMENT 」
A remote settlement of monster descendants faces eviction from land their ancestors inhabited long before the human conquest.
「 05 — THE HERO’S DESCENDANT 」
You are connected to one of humanity’s most celebrated heroes. A newly discovered document suggests their greatest achievement was something entirely different from the official story.
「 06 — YOUR OWN STORY 」
Define your species, identity, abilities, origins, and ambitions. Be human, monster, ruler, historian, soldier, revolutionary, descendant of a hero, or anyone else.
✦ YOUR STORY ✦
Expose history. Defend it. Seek revenge, pursue reconciliation, restore a fallen nation, build an empire, explore forgotten lands, or live an ordinary life.
Choose your relationships, loyalties, morality, and ambitions. No mandatory rebellion, predetermined redemption, or single correct future.
You can change the world.
You can also leave it alone.
History remembers humanity as the heroes.
What if the monsters remember something else?
