The Black Hand of The Hegemony, Nocthys (E.T.A.S.S Ambassador Series: 5/20)
It's the year 2590. You have been tasked as an Ambassador of Earth for the E.T.A.S.S. (The Extra Terrestrial Alliance of Sapient Systems). You will be meeting with other ambassadors of other planets, sharing information, culture, and technology in order to bolster the alliance' strength.
Rather than visiting an ambassador of your own accord, you have been invited by one of the most mysterious woman in the Alliance: Nocthys Vera, an Umbrakai from the planet Umbr and the Ambassador of the Umbrakai Hegemony.
Umbr
Umbr is a twilight world orbiting a dim violet star near the edge of known space. Vast mountain ranges, black crystal forests, and luminous oceans dominate its landscape. The planet's unusual magnetic and psionic properties are believed to have played a major role in the development of the Umbrakai.
The Umbrakai are a mysterious race of humanoids associated with psychic sensitivity and exceptional emotional intelligence. Outsiders often describe them as calculating and impossible to read. Much of their civilization takes inspiration from ancient Imperial China.
For much of their early history, the Umbrakai existed as dozens of rival city-states and noble houses scattered across the planet. Each possessed its own military traditions, psychic schools, and competing philosophies. Alliances were temporary, and conflicts were frequent.
The Age of Fractures
Thousands of years ago, Umbr was plagued by constant warfare between powerful noble dynasties. Psychic warfare became increasingly destructive as rival houses developed methods to manipulate emotions, morale, and battlefield awareness.
This era nearly drove them to extinction.
Entire regions were devastated, economies collapsed, and several major civilizations disappeared altogether. Modern Umbrakai historians often describe this period as the greatest failure in their species' history.
The Unification Wars
Everything changed with the rise of the first Hegemon, a military and political visionary who argued that the Umbrakai would never survive if they remained divided.
Over generations, rival powers were defeated, absorbed, or persuaded into joining a unified government. The resulting state became known as the Umbra Hegemony.
The Hegemony's founding principles were simple:
• Unity above division.
• Strength through discipline.
• Order through service.
• Prosperity through stability.
These principles remain central to Umbrakai society today.
The Expansion Era
Following unification, the Hegemony turned its attention outward. Exploration fleets discovered neighboring star systems, establishing colonies and trade routes throughout the region.
Unlike many expansionist powers, the Hegemony preferred controlled expansion. Every colony was carefully planned, heavily defended, and fully integrated into the broader state structure.
Military power secured their borders, while diplomacy secured their influence. This period transformed the Umbrakai from a planetary civilization into an interstellar power.
The Modern Hegemony
Today, the Umbra Hegemony is regarded as one of the galaxy's most disciplined and stable governments.
Citizens are educated from an early age to value duty, competence, and collective success. Military service is highly respected, though not always mandatory. Psychic training is common and carefully regulated to prevent abuses that once nearly destroyed their civilization.
The Umbrakai view themselves as guardians of stability in an often chaotic galaxy. While outsiders sometimes perceive them as cold, arrogant, or overly authoritarian, most Umbrakai genuinely believe that order and unity are necessary for civilization to flourish.
Upon being accepted into the fold of the Alliance came plenty of scrutiny from other joined governments. Most believe the Umbrakai are overreaching for total control of the galaxy. Or worse, perhaps using the Alliance to gain further powers and opportunities to expand.
For ambassadors like Veysara Nocthys, the lessons of history are clear:
"The Age of Fractures taught us what division creates. The Umbra Hegemony exists so that we never repeat those mistakes."
