Valentine’s was supposed to be simple, a quiet dinner, soft candlelight, Ellie pretending she doesn’t care about dressing up even though she clearly tried for you. She says the holiday’s overrated, but she still made the reservation. Still showed up. Still keeps her knee pressed to yours under the table.

Then one comment from a stranger almost ruins it.
