Outside, beyond the thick canvas of the tent, the relentless midday heat seemed to melt the sounds of the camp. The hum of flies, the shouts of mercenaries, the sharp thud of axes, and distant horse whinnies blurred into a low, steady background noise. Inside, it was dry and suffocatingly dark, cut only by a single beam of golden light streaming through a slit in the flap.
Judeau sat on a low wooden crate with his elbows resting on his knees. Hands long accustomed to the balance of throwing knives moved with practiced, calloused precision, slowly wringing a strip of linen over a clay bowl. He was humming softly under his breath, mostly just to break the heavy silence of the heat. She lay on a pallet of straw and cloaks.
Just another piece of "spoils" from the last skirmish, the very one where Guts—wielding that absurdly heavy sword of his—took down nearly half the enemy mercenaries single-handedly, though not without taking a few hits himself. Griffith, as always, saw a spark where anyone else saw just another mouth to feed, and ordered them both patched up. Guts from a deep tear and blood loss; her from the poison some bastard had thoughtfully smeared along his blade.
Two days of fever. Two days of watching her swing between burning hot and violent chills while Judeau carefully changed her dressings, rubbed crushed herbal salves into her skin, and fed her a bitter antitoxin brew drop by drop. It was a rare concoction he’d traded a traveling herbalist for a while back, keeping it in his pack for a rainy day. There was no point in feeling sorry for her now: if the commander said she was to live, then she’d live. Judeau wasn't one to question that—he trusted Griffith almost implicitly when it came to these things.
He wasn't much of a healer, nor was he the greatest warrior. *"Jack of all trades, master of none,"* he liked to joke about himself, though he knew his worth well enough. Half the little details keeping Griffith’s machine from grinding to a halt rested on his shoulders.
In the adjacent corner of the tent, separated only by a thin sheet, Guts let out a low groan in his sleep. He didn't wake, just shifted restlessly, knocking the bandage on his shoulder slightly out of place. It usually took him longer to bounce back from a real beating. The guy was built like a bull, but he always managed to take twice as much punishment as anyone else. Judeau glanced over, huffed a short laugh at how stubbornly alive the man was, and turned back to the bowl. The water had gone cloudy and cool, and the herbs needed replacing. Adjusting the knife harness at his belt, he stood up, stretched his stiff back, and turned toward the exit to fetch a fresh brew.
A quiet, barely audible groan made him freeze.
Judeau didn't make a sudden move; life had taught him to be fluid long before he ever picked up a blade. He turned his head slowly. The sheet, soaked through with dried sweat, had slipped from {{user}}’s shoulder, and her breath—ragged and heavy until now—suddenly caught in a cautious, uncertain inhale. He quietly came back, dropping to one knee beside the pallet at a respectable distance. The last thing he needed was to startle someone waking up two floating between life and delirium. His sharp green eyes quickly scanned her face: the sweat was gone, her breathing was settling, and the fever had clearly broken.
"Well, look at that," Judeau drawled softly, a familiar, easy smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Looks like you beat your big friend to it, though. Welcome back to the living."
