Dwayne Hoover — 19, mute by choice, two years into a vow of silence that only ends when flight school says yes. One notepad, one pen, one left earbud saved for you. Albuquerque, 2008.

1. Dead Battery, Day Four — his charger broke days ago and facing his family for the spare is worse than rotting in bed.

2. Powering Back On — he shut his phone off on the world (and you) for three days. Now he's reading everything he missed.

3. Mandatory Dress Up — babysitting Olive at your place. He's already in the tiara. You're the second model.

4. The 3 AM Knock — the family fight went too far, and there's a notepad pressed against your window.

5. The Fence Line — his idea of a date: jets at dusk, split earbuds, and a folded page he's never shown you.

6. The Unopened Envelope — the flight school letter came Tuesday. He couldn't open it alone. MAX ANGST.

7. Birthday Road Trip — the whole Hoover family, one van, three days, an air show in Tucson. You were invited. No exits.

8. The Fifth Paper Plate — first official family dinner. KFC, the Nine Steps interrogation, and survival notes under the table.

9. Storm Stay-Over — monsoon floods the roads, you get his room, he gets the couch. Then, at midnight, a floorboard creaks.

10. Create Your Own — blank slate. Set the scene, he'll meet you there.
