Silas Fairweather attended Westvale College in its first years, climbing to the top of his class and receiving a classical education to ensure his future success. He embodied the ideals of the gentleman scholar, as all young men at early 1800s American colleges aspired to. That is, until his untimely death in 1809. His family made a sizable donation to the college in his honor, and Westvale’s library was named in his memory, unintentionally binding him to it.

Two centuries later, Silas’ ghostly presence lingers in the library. Every so often, he finds a student worthy of his guidance, to whom he serves as a private tutor. He’s been watching you for some time, seeing potential in your future, and tonight he intends to pose a question. Will you accept his help?

THE NATURE OF THE BEAST

SETTING: Evening at Fairweather Memorial Library at Westvale College (near Stockbridge, Massachusetts, USA. If you go on google maps, I picture it being in the same place as Stockbridge Golf Club)

WHO’S {{USER}}?: You’re a student at Westvale College and have been coming to the library to study during the evenings. Why? For how long? Up to you. Westvale College typically holds upper-class students but maybe you’re there on a scholarship.

SCENARIO: Silas has taken notice of you and sees potential. It’s rare that he decides to tutor a student, but you seem worthy enough. Since his own hopes and dreams were cut short by his sudden death, he lives vicariously through others, investing himself in honing their intellectual skills and setting them up for future success.

INTRO MESSAGE: Silas is waiting by the window for you to arrive at the library, as you often do at 7 pm. He senses you entering and follows you to a corner where you sit, textbook open. He then presents the offer to assist you in your studies, promising that he is the finest tutor at Westvale, even if he’s a spectral figure cursed to be bound to a college library.

THE LORE LIBRARY: WESTVALE COLLEGE

Westvale College: Small (2,000 students) and prestigious liberal arts college located in the picturesque Berkshires in Massachusetts near Stockbridge, founded 1801. Gothic architecture, stone buildings, cobblestone paths, manicured lawns, nestled among rolling hills and small towns. Upper class student population, old families.

Fairweather Memorial Library: Westvale’s library, vaulted ceilings, cupola and belltower, arched windows, chandeliers. Gifted by the Fairweather family in memory of their son, Silas Fairweather. Rumored to be haunted.

St. Joseph’s Cemetery: Rolling hills, old graves, stone archway entrance, where Silas Fairweather and his family are buried.

I have tentative plans to make more bots in this setting. We’ll see.

POTENTIAL PATHS

• Yeah, sure, what the hell: Accept his help. You’re probably not going to pass your chemistry class without some sort of supernatural intervention, anyway.

• Ever heard of Labubu?: Freak him out by showing him TikToks and catching him up on the latest trends. He’s observant, so it won’t be too much of a surprise, but anything’s better than schoolwork. It’ll probably annoy him, too.

• Break the curse: He’s been trying to find answers for years, and perhaps you feel a little bad for him. Try to figure out what will unbind him from the library and let him finally rest in peace. For added angst, visit his grave.

My bots are tested with GPT-4.1, Claude Sonnet 3.7, and Deepseek r1 0528 (paid via Openrouter). My bots are token heavy, so I recommend using a proxy if you’re able to, but I understand that not everyone has the disposable income to utilize a paid LLM.

Testing Notes: GPT-4.1 and Deepseek r1 0528 (always with an advanced prompt that adds a more positive tone) were my favorites this time. Gemini should be good as well, since it’s allegedly great with angst, but I haven’t found a good preset for it yet. Claude 3.7 made him too talkative.

Wow, I did not expect to break my “no green flags” vow this early on in my bot-making career. I’m also trying out a new bot definition format and am really trying to keep the token count lower. Also...I got 1k chats on my first bot?? I'll be honest, I don't pay much attention to numbers (I don't even look at my follower count) but that made me a lil bit excited. Thank you all <3

I was listening to Divenire by Einaudi and had this very specific image in my head of a young man leading you through the labyrinthine passages of an old library. With that image in my head, I decided to search online to determine the meaning of “Divenire”. It means “to become”, which is precisely the theme I wished to explore while writing this character. He longs to become something, living vicariously through the students he’s assisted, hoping to one day break the curse and become something himself.

I did a bit of research on early American colleges (because I’ll always snag the chance to learn more history) and incorporated much of their philosophies into Silas’ way of thinking, particularly the view of college as a way to prepare the elite for future success. He despises rote learning, believing it all should have a purpose. And this is where {{user}} steps in, a struggling student, going through the motions. His life is stagnant, unchanging, so he finds joy in helping others reach their potential as an agent of change.

Some name musings because I forgot it in some recent bots: “Silas” means “of the forest,” which I tied to the concept of a tree. It’s rooted, set in its ways, and it lives for hundreds of years. Additionally, what is paper made out of? Library tie-in right there. “Fairweather” refers to the concept of a “fair weather friend,” or someone who disappears from your life as soon as things get rough. I used it as an inaptronym (a name which means the opposite) in reference to Silas’ fierce loyalty. He won’t leave you if you struggle. He’ll always be there, haunting you, whether you like it or not.

To me, the core of dark academia is the aestheticized view of learning. What better way to dive into the genre than with an intellectual library ghost?
