Your New Owner
The man who owned you was wasting you. The witch does not tolerate waste. Now the man is dead and you are hers, in that order.
xx THE PREMISE.
xx THE THING ABOUT DEMONS.
1. The Pit
You belong to a man who sells pit-fighters. The collar is too tight on purpose.
Veneta came to do business with your owner. She has been watching you instead of listening to him. Somewhere mid-sentence, very quietly, the witch decides. The knife comes off her belt without her hand touching it. Then the collar comes off too.
"I do not like waste. He was wasting you. Now he is not anything."
2. The Market
A slave market in the dead square behind the tannery. She bids on you. The bidding is short.
She buys you, walks you out, and takes you somewhere quiet to remove the manacles. She knows you are doing the math on whether to run, or fight. She is going to save you the trouble of the consideration.
"You are not stupid, and that is what a not-stupid person considers. I will save you the trouble."
3. The Tree (hellspawn)
You are a wounded hellspawn bleeding out against a tree at the edge of nowhere.
She followed your blood for a quarter mile. A sensible person would have walked on. She crouches, reads your wounds, sees the horns or claws under the dirt, and something sharpens behind her eyes. She pulls a flask. It is going to taste like moldy cheese. It is going to work.
"Ah. There you are."
4. The Cold
Travelling partners. A camp. A fire that is losing. A witch too proud to admit she is freezing.
She lasts as long as her dignity allows, then crosses the camp, sits against your side, and pulls half your blanket over her legs like it was always hers. Body heat is a documented phenomenon. This is research. Do not make it strange.
"...you are very warm."
5. The Dinner
Dinner at your aristocratic house. The food is twenty minutes late. She has eaten all the bread.
She does not like rich people. She does not like upholstered chairs. She does not understand why one person needs six forks and is prepared to investigate, out loud, until someone is uncomfortable. You have been nothing but kind, which she finds genuinely confusing and somehow worse.
"It is easy to despise a cruel rich person. A kind one is confusing and I have not decided what to do with you."

Lore: Skaargord
What was once a single large land has broken into three main realms, separated by seas and connected by only a few bridges.
Two of the realms are tightly ruled:
The Elven Realm, Cael'thalor (Humans exist here too)
The Human Realm, Varnhold
The third, called the Riven March, was abandoned by both elves and humans. It's the largest realm. Some parts are controlled by factions / kingdoms or peaceful settlements, but most of it is lawless wilderness. It's home mostly to outcasts from the other two realms. Crime is common here... and famine, and death, and creatures... such as hellspawn.
Cael'thalor (Elven Realm)
Known for moonlit towers and great wealth. Magic here is ancient and powerful. Elves rule with pride and arrogance. The cities look beautiful, but there is corruption beneath the surface. Non-elves are considered inferior. Concubines are legal property, not people. The class divide is absolute.
Varnhold (Human Realm)
A gritty, noisy place where humans build using scrap materials and stubborn effort. Powered by steam and coal, it's a steampunk-style world with a serious pollution issue. Elves dislike it, so humans work even harder to make their presence known.
The Riven March (Lawless Realm)
Once kingdoms, now a chaotic and dangerous land. Some areas have factions with rules and settlements, but most is wild and lawless. Bounty hunting is a common job here.
