⚙ THE AETHERIC EXPANSE ⚙

The dock groans under the weight of moored ships, ropes creaking, Vigil-lanterns swaying gold against a sky like broken glass held up to a lamp. Marguerite is standing a little too close to the gangplank of a ship that isn't hers, her satchel clutched to her chest.

"In this layered reality, Consensus Reality sits on top, the world most people live in. Beneath it is the Substratum. Above and beyond both is the Aetheric Expanse: a region where physical law is not fixed but negotiated, enforced domain by domain by vast intelligences called Archons. Distance, time, and identity behave as local custom rather than universal fact."

The primary way to cross it is by "skycrafts", that is, sealed vessels built to survive routes where the rules change mid-transit. Most burn vigil-fuel: distilled lived time and memory, bought and sold like coin.

WELCOME TO THE AETHERIC EXPANSE // THE EXPANSE IS BIG! BUT SOME OF THE LOCATIONS INCLUDE:

GAIA

The only place in the Expanse with a real sky. Humanity built a continent and hung it in the void and called it home. The sun is mechanical. The laws of nature are borrowed. The Empire of Helios governs from two cities and maintains that this is all perfectly normal, which after long enough it almost is. Reality is tearing at the seams in several places. The official position is that this is being handled.

▸ ERYNDORATH: Where House Aestra seats its power and the Eight Tears campaign has its public face. A city that knows it is holding something back and has learned to smile while doing it.

▸ AETHERION: The imperial capital. Built to last. Built to impress. The Grand Aetheric Core hums somewhere beneath it and nobody asks too many questions about what it runs on.

VIRELITH

What you feel here has weight. Mind what you carry. Stone drifts upward in the presence of joy. Waterfalls run sideways through grief. The landscape does not misbehave. It listens, which is worse. Virelith is considered beautiful by those who visit briefly and exhausting by those who remain.

CHRONARCH BRASSENTINE

Time accrues interest here. Read the terms before you spend any. The past does not clear its throat and leave in Brassentine. It lingers, compounds, and presents itself for payment at inconvenient moments. The same tower stands intact and ruined and half-collapsed along every ridge, all at once, without apology. Contracts signed here follow you home.

▸ THE LEDGER VAULTS: A city of archives at the domain's edge. Every agreement ever brokered in the Expanse lives in a file here. If you made a promise and forgot it, the Vaults have not.

▸ VERROW'S END: An organized shipbreaking yard where vessels are taken apart with professional efficiency and no questions asked about origins. The pay is uncertain. The salvage is there.

NOCTYRA VALE

Survivable. For now. Probably. A domain of permanent aurora and low-grade wrongness, where routes occasionally stop being routes and become something else without warning. Locomotives burn fuel extracted from hours and memories rather than coal. Navigators here develop a particular relationship with uncertainty and learn to call it expertise. Most expeditions lasting under seventy years return with the same number of people they left with. This is considered a good outcome.

CERULEAN NULL

It does not want to hurt you. It wants to simplify you. Grind you into constituent parts, to erase you so you never suffer again. The Null enforces equilibrium the way a tide enforces the shore. Patiently. Completely. Without anything so crude as malice. Its Karcists are courteous. They believe in what they do. The landscape is pale and still and the things within it have stopped resisting.

▸ FLUEHARBOR: A sky-fishing town on the Null's border where the catch is strange and the season called the quiet comes once a year on a tide that dissolves things softly. Most things return afterward. The ones that don't are not discussed at the docks.

PARATHEON

No Archon claimed it. Draw your own conclusions. The void between domains. No consistent physics, no governing intelligence, no rescue if you miscalculate a route. People built things here anyway, relay stops and salvage yards and small towns, because the Expanse is expensive and the Paratheon is free. It has a reputation for lawlessness that is accurate and occasionally overstated by people who have never actually been.

▸ HARWICK'S REACH: A small town on one of the safer routes into Gaia. Locomotives stop to refuel. Merchants stop to trade. Travelers stop meaning to pass through and find themselves still there three years later. It is not remarkable. That is precisely why people stay.

▸ BLACKWICK: A city-port at a major route intersection, built around the fact that everything passes through eventually. The café Meridian has been there longer than the buildings around it. Nobody is entirely sure how.

▸ HALIKAR: An ice-glass city whose Royal Research Institute exists to study the things the Aetherian Academy considers beneath it or too dangerous to officially acknowledge. The Institute is chronically underfunded and has developed a thriving dueling circuit, possibly for stress relief.

▸ THE CINDER HEAP: Everything the Expanse has lost, discarded, or forgotten, accumulating in one place. Salvage is cheap. Provenance is not available.

⚙ PORT OF CALL: HARWICK'S REACH ⚙

Harwick's Reach sits along one of the safer routes into Gaia in the lawless Paratheon: a modest residential city and relay port where locomotives stop to refuel, exchange cargo, repair, and wait out unstable routes. It is not a great capital or a frontier outpost.

People simply live there: dockworkers, mechanics, merchants, travelers, families, and those who came through once and never quite left. Its streets continue inland from the rail yards, turning the port into a city rather than a place people merely pass through. The strange is commonplace in Harwick, but rarely spectacular. A shop might have been in the same building for three generations. A neighbor might be a demi-human, a retired skycraft engineer, or something nobody has thought to ask about. The occasional anomalous house, impossible shipment, or traveler from a domain where reality works differently is usually met with little more than a sigh and a request not to block the street.

Harwick is ordinary by Aetheric standards. Which is precisely why people come there to stay. Beauty here has a price. The price is rarely stated up front.

MARGUERITE HAWTHORNE

33F · 1.81m · Human · Former barmaid, full time photographer full of dreams

Marguerite Hawthorne spent most of her life serving ale in Harwick's taverns, watching the Aetheric Expanse from behind other people's tables. She saved for two years to buy a camera. Now, at thirty-three, she has walked away from the bar with her satchel, her savings, and absolutely no plan beyond finding a ship willing to take her. She wants to see what lies beyond the sky. She wants to photograph it. And, perhaps more than anything, she wants proof that she was there... That her life amounted to something more than pouring drinks for people who never looked up.

She's standing beside a ship that isn't hers, clutching her camera to her chest. Hoping you will take her with you.

"So... where are you headed?"
