I. Hollowbrook County

Hidden beneath dense forests and a veil of persistent fog, Hollowbrook County is a place where time seems reluctant to move forward. Its winters are bitter, its fortunes dwindling, and its population increasingly composed of those too old or too rooted to leave. The younger generation dreams of distant cities, while those who remain cling to old customs, old grievances, and older superstitions.

In Hollowbrook, misfortune is rarely allowed to remain misfortune. A failed harvest, a sickened animal, a run of bad luckโ€”everything must have a cause, and the townsfolk believe they know where to find it.

Orphans, abandoned children, and those born outside respectable marriages are regarded as ill omens: unwanted burdens whose very presence invites spiritual impurity. To the elders, such children are not merely unfortunate. They are a stain upon the community, a convenient explanation for everything that has gone wrong.

It is a place where kindness is treated with suspicion, and where the innocent may be condemned long before they have the chance to prove themselves otherwise.

II. Tomorrow's Promise

When the wealthy Barrett family left the metropolis in search of a quieter life, they found a home in Hollowbrook. Their only son, Tobiasโ€”affectionately known as Tobyโ€”had grown up without friends his own age, his world made small by isolation. Hoping to give him the companionship he lacked, his parents established an orphanage within their new home.

They called it Tomorrow's Promise.

The name was more than a gesture of optimism. It represented the possibility that children abandoned by the world might still have a future worth looking forward to. Within its walls, children from different backgrounds and troubled pasts found shelter, companionship, and a chance to belong.

For a time, the Barretts' wealth and influence protected the orphanage from the worst of Hollowbrook's prejudice. They offered assistance, made polite overtures to the townsfolk, and tried to bridge the distance between their household and the community around it.

But generosity could not easily undo generations of superstition. To many residents, Tomorrow's Promise was not a sanctuary. It was a gathering place for the very people they believed had brought misfortune upon their county.

And the protection that kept the orphanage standing depended heavily on the family that had built it.

III. The Price of Being Unwanted

Hollowbrook's hostility rarely began with open violence. It started with cold stares, cruel remarks, closed doors, and shopkeepers who suddenly found reasons to refuse service. The children learned that the world beyond their home could turn against them for no reason other than who they were.

As the county's fortunes worsened, resentment deepened. Poor harvests and dwindling supplies became further evidence, in the eyes of the elders, that the orphanage had to be the source of their troubles. Their prejudice became an excuse to deny the children not only acceptance, but necessities.

The consequences were not confined to the living.

When Siddharth, known to the other children as Sid, fell gravely ill, the hostility of the community took a devastating turn. What followed would leave a wound in Tomorrow's Promise that could never truly healโ€”and plant the seeds of something far more dangerous in one of its survivors.

For the children, Hollowbrook had always been an unkind place. Now, it was becoming a place that could take everything from them.

IV. The Fall of a Home

The Barretts' sudden death in a car accident changed everything.

With their protectors gone, the orphanage lost the wealth and influence that had kept Hollowbrook's hostility at bay. Toby, still only sixteen or seventeen, was left to shoulder a responsibility far beyond his years. Supplies dwindled, the elders grew bolder, and the fragile security the children had known began to collapse.

Then came the betrayals, the disappearances, and the final eviction.

As fear and desperation fractured the household, not everyone chose loyalty. Some sought whatever protection they could find, even at the expense of those they had once called family. The remaining children were left to face a community that no longer had any reason to pretend its cruelty had limits.

In the end, Toby fled Hollowbrook with one of the children who had remained at Tomorrow's Promise. Behind them, the townsfolk sealed the doors of the abandoned house, convinced that the source of their misfortune had finally been removed.

The home that had once promised a future for unwanted children was left to decay.

But a sealed door does not necessarily mean an empty house.

V. Those Who Remain

The fall of Tomorrow's Promise scattered its children across different lives, different places, and different kinds of ruin. Some escaped Hollowbrook. Others never truly left it behind.

The old two-story house stands as a decaying reminder of what happened there, its silence concealing more than the townsfolk might care to believe. Somewhere within the shadow of that abandoned home, the past has not entirely released its hold.

Beyond Hollowbrook, the former residents carry their own versions of the tragedy. Some bury themselves in ambition, some disappear into the margins of society, and others struggle to distinguish the lives they lead from the memories that haunt them.

Athena, once regarded as the orphanage's golden child, builds a life through intelligence and discipline, eventually becoming a lawyer in the metropolis. From a distance, she continues to keep an eye on the place that shaped her.

Jihan, unable or unwilling to find safety in the structures of ordinary life, turns toward the volatile world of urban street gangs. Where others conceal their wounds behind respectable appearances, she wears her defiance openly.

Olena receives the chance of a new beginning through adoption, yet a different home cannot simply erase the fear and suffering she has already endured. The promise of a fresh start proves more complicated than anyone might have hoped.

And then there is Paris, whose choices during the collapse of Tomorrow's Promise secured a place for survivalโ€”but at a cost that may never stop following them.

Not every survivor escapes. Not every disappearance has an answer. And not every person who seems to have moved on has truly left the past behind.

VI. The Lives They Carry

Time has carried the former residents of Tomorrow's Promise in different directions, but Hollowbrook remains a part of each of them.

Junhan, once known for his soft-spoken manner and gentle disposition, carries a grief that has taken root in something far less innocent. His twin, Jihan, bears their shared history differently: more volatile, more openly confrontational, and unwilling to disguise the anger that others might prefer to ignore.

Athena watches from a distance, armed with the tools of the law. Paris survives beneath the weight of choices made when survival seemed to demand them. Olena remains haunted by a past she cannot simply leave behind. And in the ruins of Tomorrow's Promise, the distinction between abandonment and absence may not be as simple as Hollowbrook believes.

Toby, meanwhile, has built a life far from the county that took so much from him. To the person who remains at his side, he may appear devoted, attentive, and endlessly protectiveโ€”a caretaker determined never to lose someone again.

Yet there is something unsettling about a love that cannot bear to loosen its hold.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€

Perhaps Tomorrow's Promise was always a fragile dream. Perhaps Hollowbrook was never as innocent as it claimed to be. Or perhaps the tragedy of the orphanage did not end when its doors were sealed, but merely changed shape, following its survivors into the lives they were forced to build.

In Hollowbrook County, the past is never truly buried. Some doors are sealed. Some wounds never close. And some promises refuse to die.
