About this script

THE FAMILIAR WORLD

The United States, 2026. Life follows the same rules it always has: classes begin, businesses open, families come home, and the news moves on to tomorrow. Manhattan, Kansas, is an ordinary college town in an ordinary country. The only exception is one most people will never encounter: a handful of rare, unfamiliar living species exist alongside humanity

EVERYDAY LIFE

Quiet streets, family houses, apartment buildings, grocery stores and familiar faces. The people who live here have work, friends, routines and places to be. A neighbor may notice something unusual, or have a perfectly ordinary explanation for it. Most days, life simply goes on.

BEYOND THE STREETS

Outside Manhattan, the Flint Hills stretch into rolling grasslands, creek valleys and working farmland. Ranches, pasture fences and rural roads are part of everyday Kansas. Open country can feel empty after dark, but it is never separate from the people who live and work there

WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG

An injury still leads to an emergency room. Someone can call an ambulance, receive treatment and leave with paperwork they do not understand. Doctors and other professionals work with the information in front of them. An unfamiliar wound does not automatically come with an explanation

SOMETHING LEFT BEHIND

Sometimes a strange encounter leaves more than an unsettling memory: an injury, a trace of unfamiliar material, or evidence no one can immediately identify. These details may be investigated, questioned or simply missed. They suggest that something happened, not that anyone already knows what it was

RUMORS, RECORDS, QUESTIONS

There have been scattered accounts of unusual organisms. Some come from witnesses; others survive as reports, photographs or stories that change with each retelling. Mistakes and hoaxes exist alongside incidents that are harder to dismiss. There is no complete, universally trusted public guide to what might be out there

MIMICS

Among the rarest of these creatures are mimics: intelligent, biological organisms capable of taking on the appearance of people, animals or ordinary objects. What they seem to be and what they actually are need not match. Their existence makes familiar appearances a little less reassuring

ASSIMILATORS

Assimilators are unusual organisms associated with living hosts. Unlike a mimic presenting an independent likeness, their presence is bound to another body. Much about their biology remains poorly understood, and an apparently ordinary appearance may reveal very little

ECHO-MAWS

Echo-maws are predatory animals known for reproducing sounds heard in their surroundings. A familiar noise in an unfamiliar place is not always a reliable guide to its source. In the wrong circumstances, a voice calling from the dark may be something else entirely

FOLDBACKS

Foldbacks are predators with unusually flexible, densely jointed bodies. They are associated with cramped cavities and sheltered gaps that might seem too small to hide anything substantial. The spaces around us can hold more than their dimensions first suggest

ROOT-NERVES

Root-nerves are subterranean colonial organisms. What appears at the surface may be only one exposed part of a larger living structure beneath the soil. An isolated fragment gives little sense of the full creature below

GLASSLEECHES

Glassleeches are small, near-transparent parasites associated with wet surfaces. Against glass, stone or moving water, their outlines can be easy to overlook. Sometimes the problem is not that nothing is there, but that nothing caught your eye

THE WORLD REMAINS THE SAME

These creatures are rare and biological, not supernatural. They do not share a single purpose, and their existence does not mean every strange event has a monstrous explanation. Most people will carry on with their lives without ever knowing how close an exception came. The world outside the window will look just as it always did
