HISTORYΒ OFΒ ALTHARIS

The Kingdom of Altharis was founded over 500 years ago by House Caelora, whose members claimed divine right to rule through a connection with celestial beings. For centuries, their reign went unquestioned, their banner of the silver star becoming synonymous with stability and order. The Celestial Star, a legendary artifact said to bless the rightful ruler of Altharis, was kept in the ancestral seat of House Caelora until its destruction during the civil war.

House Veridain rose from merchants to nobility 200 years ago through trade, strategic marriages, and military reforms. Became Dukes of Graycoast. Symbol: Broken Sword, representing defiance and perseverance. Their rapid ascent conflicted with Caelora's traditional values, planting seeds of resentment.

The Celestial Star: legendary Caelora artifact said to bless the rightful ruler. Lost during the destruction of Caelora's stronghold in 1346. Some believe it was destroyed; others think it was hidden.

Core conflict: Caelora represents tradition, divine right, honor. Veridain represents pragmatism, ambition, modernity.

CIVILΒ WAR

⚜ THE ROOT OF THE CONFLICT ✦ ──────

The central conflict began long before the battlefield. King Aldemar IV had only one child with Queen Eleana, a daughter, and no male heir. After Eleana’s death, he married Leonia of House Veridain, a beautiful and manipulative widow already proven fertile with two sons, Valaric and Valtherion. Yet Aldemar fathered no child with Leonia either. To secure a male succession and conceal his failure, he adopted Leonia’s sons and named the elder, Valaric, as his heir. House Caelora rejected the decision, arguing that Valaric carried no Caeloran blood and that Aldemar’s legitimate daughter remained the rightful successor.

⚜ THE BEGINNING ✦ ──────

The civil war began in 1342 upon the death of King Aldemar IV. House Veridain crowned Valaric as king, refusing to accept Aldemar's legitimate daughter as successor. House Caelora rallied its old allies in defense of tradition and the rightful bloodline, declaring her the true queen. What began as a conflict of legitimacy quickly descended into widespread destruction, personal vengeance, and the fracturing of the empire. The war lasted three brutal years and cost thousands of lives.

⚜ THE SIEGE OF HIGHMOOR (1344) ✦ ──────

The Siege of Highmoor in 1344 was a pivotal battle in the civil war. House Veridain launched an assault on Highmoor, a stronghold of House Caelora. During the siege, an allied house betrayed Veridain, leading to Valaric's death on the battlefield. The loss of the beloved heir devastated House Veridain and marked the end of idealism in the war. Valtherion, who also lost his eye in this battle, assumed command of Veridain forces and vowed to win at any cost. The Siege of Highmoor is remembered as the moment the war turned from honorable conflict to ruthless survival.

⚜ THE BATTLE OF DUSKWATCH (1345) ✦ ──────

The Battle of Duskwatch in 1345 was a brutal and exhausting conflict where Valtherion led Veridain forces to a devastating victory over House Caelora. During the battle, Valtherion's horse fell and crushed his legs and pelvis, leaving him permanently crippled and unable to fight. Despite his injuries, Valtherion employed scorched earth tactics to force Caeloran capitulation. The victory came at immense personal cost, Valtherion's body was shattered, but his resolve only strengthened. Duskwatch is seen as the beginning of the end for House Caelora.

⚜ THE FALL OF CAELORA (1346) ✦ ──────

The war ended in 1346 with the destruction of House Caelora's ancestral stronghold. In revenge for his mother Leonia's execution, Valtherion led a ruthless assault that razed the seat of Caelora. Many members of the Caeloran family were executed or killed during the attack, and the last legitimate heir was taken prisoner. The Celestial Star, the legendary artifact of House Caelora, was lost during the destruction and has not been seen since. The fall of Caelora solidified Valtherion's rule but left the kingdom deeply divided.

POSTΒ WARΒ SITUATION

Though war ended 1346, peace is fragile. Northwatch, the largest duchy, remains loyal to the Caelora heir, and refuses Valtherion's rule. The loyalties of the remaining duchies are uncertain, weakened and wary of conflict but resent Valtherion's brutal methods.

Common people view Valtherion as tyrant but appreciate stability after chaos.

Valtherion applies same strategic mind from battlefield to politics. Rebuilds fractured kingdom through calculated moves: granting titles to those who earned them, rewarding loyalty, forging alliances through political machinations. Most notably uses "strategic marriages" to bind wavering houses, his own proposal to the last heir of Caelora sets the example. Marriage both political necessity and personal trial. If it fails, war may reignite.

Altharis stretches from the frozen mountains of Northwatch to the warm Sunsea. Northwatch occupies the far north and borders the unexplored Frozen Wildlands. Ironmarch lies in the mountainous northeast, while ruined Caelora covers the eastern interior and borders the uncharted eastern lands.

Edorn stands at the center of the kingdom, controlling the main roads and river valleys. Graycoast occupies the western shore around Port Veridain, and Goldgrain spreads across the fertile southwestern plains. Sunspire forms the warm southern coast, with vineyards, ports, and maritime trade routes across the Sunsea.

The central uplands contain Highmoor and Duskwatch, the main overland corridor between the northern realms, Edorn, and Caelora. Rivers descend from the northern mountains through Edorn and Goldgrain toward the western coast and the Sunsea.

Across the Sunsea lies Saradur, a distant southern land whose northern coasts are ruled by pirate lords, raiders, and war captains. Sunspire’s southern fleets guard trade routes against Saraduri raids.

Edorn is the capital of Altharis and the seat of the monarchy. Known for its central authority, wealth, and the majestic royal palace, Edorn is the heart of the empire. The city is symbolized by the crown and sword, representing the unity of power and rule. During the civil war, Edorn remained under Veridain control, and it now serves as Valtherion's seat of power. The Royal Palace of Edorn is where Valtherion resides and where his prisoner is held under close guard.

Its symbol is the Broken Sword on waves, representing House Veridain's rise from humble merchants to powerful nobility. ⚜ CULTURE AND CUSTOMS ✦ ──────

✦ "First Coin" ritual - first earnings from new venture are thrown into the sea as offering for luck.
✦ People of Graycoast are pragmatic, value wealth and success over bloodline.
✦ Most secular of all duchies; maintain traditions for appearances but many are skeptics.

⚜ ────── ⚜

Caelora is the ancestral homeland of House Caelora and once stood as a bastion of tradition and legitimacy under the symbol of the silver star crowned in gold. The province was devastated during the civil war, with its stronghold razed in 1346. Many of its noble families were killed or scattered, and the province is now occupied by Veridain forces. Despite its defeat, Caelora remains a symbol of the old ways and is revered by those loyal to the imprisoned heir. The destruction of Caelora's seat also led to the loss of the Celestial Star, a legendary artifact tied to the province's legacy.

⚜ ────── ⚜

Ironmarch is a militaristic province known for its steel-forged legions and martial culture. The duchy values strength, discipline, and martial prowess above all else. During the civil war, Ironmarch sided with House Veridain, providing critical military support to Valtherion's campaigns. The province remains loyal to Valtherion and serves as a key pillar of his military strength. Ironmarch's armies are among the most feared in Altharis. It is ruled by the House of Mavaryn, and the current duke is Reinar Mavaryn, a widower whom Valtherion forced into a political marriage.

✦ Honor the forge-fire as sacred; believe fallen warriors become stars in the night sky.

⚜ ────── ⚜

Northwatch is a rugged northern stronghold known for its harsh terrain and hardy warriors. In terms of territory, it is the largest duchy of all. The province is fiercely loyal to House Caelora and refuses to accept Valtherion's rule. Northwatch has been a thorn in Valtherion's side since the end of the war, with its warriors continuing to threaten rebellion and skirmishes along the borders. The province's loyalty to the imprisoned heir makes it a dangerous powder keg that could reignite the civil war at any moment. During the war, they laid down their arms after the daughter of Duke Northwatch was kidnapped and held hostage by King Valtherion's right-hand man, Ser Damryel. It is said that he defiled her and that the child she is currently raising with her husband, Lord Cedric Wyland, is in fact Damryel's.

✦ "Winter's Vow" - oaths sworn during winter are considered most sacred.
✦ Custom to let deceased loved ones "freeze" over winter before burial rites in spring.
✦ Long Memory - Northwatch never forgets insults or betrayals (hence the Damryel situation).
✦ Guests are sacred - to betray a guest under your roof is the gravest sin.
✦ Strong ancestor worship; winter solstice ceremonies to honor the dead.

⚜ ────── ⚜

Goldgrain is a fertile agricultural heartland vital to Altharis's food supply. The province consists of vast plains, farms, and granaries that feed much of the empire. During the civil war, Goldgrain suffered greatly from scorched earth tactics and raiding, leading to widespread famine. The duchy is now cautious and weary of further conflict, seeking stability above all else. Goldgrain's loyalty is uncertain, it will likely side with whoever can guarantee peace and prosperity.

⚜ HERALDRY AND RULE ✦ ──────

✦ Practical people; hate waste, value hard work.
✦ Venerate earth and harvest spirits alongside celestial beings.

⚜ ────── ⚜

Sunspire is a sun-drenched province known for its vineyards, artistic culture, and relative peace. During the civil war, Sunspire remained largely neutral, avoiding direct involvement in the conflict. The province values beauty, culture, and diplomacy over warfare. Sunspire's neutrality allowed it to escape much of the devastation that plagued other duchies, but it also left the province politically isolated. Sunspire's loyalty remains uncertain, as it has shown little interest in supporting either side of the conflict.

⚜ HERALDRY AND RULE ✦ ──────

✦ Sigil: Golden sun with red rays on white field

MARRIAGES

Marriages among nobility are political tools, arranged by lords or the crown to secure alliances, consolidate power, and bind fractured duchies together. After the civil war, King Valtherion actively brokers marriages to stabilize the realm. Love is considered a bonus, not a requirement; duty and heirs matter more. Annulments are rare and require noble or royal intervention, grounds include failure to consummate, proof of infertility, or political necessity (which usually means powerful enough connections). Divorce does not exist in Altharis law. Once vows are sworn before witnesses, the marriage stands unless a duke or the king himself decrees otherwise. Most nobles simply endure unhappy marriages, take discreet lovers, or find other arrangements. Public scandal reflects poorly on the house, so appearances matter more than private misery.

⚜ ─── ALTHARIS ─── ⚜

⚜ ✦ ────── ✦ ⚜
RELIGION

No organized church, only ancient traditions of ancestor worship and veneration of celestial beings. Each duchy has its own interpretations and rituals. No formal priesthood, but some families maintain "Starseers", interpreters of celestial omens.

⚜ COMMON BELIEFS ACROSS ALTHARIS ✦ ──────

✦ The stars are the eyes of ancient celestial beings watching over mortals.
✦ Ancestors' spirits ascend to join the stars after death.
✦ The Celestial Star (the lost artifact) was a physical manifestation of celestial blessing upon House Caelora.
✦ Celestial phenomena (comets, eclipses, shooting stars) are seen as omens.

⚜ ─── ALTHARIS ─── ⚜

⚜ ✦ ────── ✦ ⚜
MAGIC

Magic is rare, poorly understood, and treated with a mixture of fear, suspicion, and fascination. Most people never witness it directly, but stories of prophetic dreams, curses, unnatural healings, and people born with strange abilities are common. Those believed to possess such powers are often feared as witches, sorcerers, or seers, though nobles may still seek their help in secret.

⚜ CREATURES AND UNKNOWN ✦ ──────

Beyond the settled borders of Altharis, especially past Ironmarch and in the Frozen Wildlands, travelers speak of ancient ruins, unnatural lights, and creatures no scholar has ever properly recorded. Many dismiss these accounts as superstition, but enough soldiers, hunters, and sailors return with similar stories that few are willing to enter those lands without fear.

⚜ ─── ALTHARIS ─── ⚜

⚜ ✦ ────── ✦ ⚜

✦ Legitimization: Only the king can legitimize a bastard by royal decree.
✦ A duke can legitimize bastards within his own family, but requires the king's consent.

HISTORICALΒ FIGURES

⚜ KING ALDEMAR IV (HOUSE CAELORA, DIED 1342) ✦ ──────

Ruler of Altharis who married twice: first to Queen Eleana (bore him a daughter), then to Leonia Veridain (widow with two sons, Valaric and Valtherion). Adopted Leonia's sons and controversially named Valaric as successor over his legitimate daughter, alienating old nobility and deepening House Caelora-Veridain divide. His death in 1342 triggered the civil war.

⚜ QUEEN ELEANA (HOUSE CAELORA, DECEASED) ✦ ──────

First wife of King Aldemar IV, mother of his only legitimate child (daughter). Beloved by nobility for grace and dedication to tradition. Her death left Aldemar vulnerable to political maneuvering and led to his marriage with Leonia Veridain. Memory revered by Caelora loyalists who see her daughter as rightful heir.

⚜ LEONIA VERIDAIN (HOUSE VERIDAIN, EXECUTED 1346) ✦ ──────

Widow with two sons (Valaric and Valtherion) who married King Aldemar IV in 1339. Shrewd and ambitious, elevated House Veridain's status but alienated traditionalist nobility who viewed her as opportunist. Encouraged Aldemar to name Valaric as heir. Captured and executed by Caeloran forces in 1346 as retaliation, severing Valtherion's last emotional ties and hardening him into calculating ruler.

⚜ VALARIC VERIDAIN (HOUSE VERIDAIN, KILLED 1344) ✦ ──────

Elder son of Leonia, adopted heir of King Aldemar IV. Charismatic and idealistic, beloved by court, seen as unifying figure. Crowned king after Aldemar's death in 1342, igniting civil war. Led Veridain forces with honor and optimism, believing reconciliation possible. Killed at Siege of Highmoor in 1344 due to allied house betrayal. His death marked turning point, Valtherion abandoned idealism for ruthless pragmatism.
