Rookhaven gives your roleplay a consistent home base. Characters can go to class at Southern Plains University, hang out in The Flats, grab food or drinks at Tailspin Tavern, browse the shops of Old Rookhaven, take a weekend trip to Lake Solmere, float the Veyr River, or escape into Rookwood Preserve. The goal is to make the world feel lived in without forcing every scene to stay on campus.

Rookhaven is a historic inland university city shaped by nearly two centuries of Southern Plains University influence. Old-money families, legacy alumni, faculty culture, student neighborhoods, historic businesses, modern commercial areas, river trips, local bars, old downtown streets, rural edges, lakes, fairgrounds, and wooded backroads all overlap within the city. It is modern, demihuman-friendly, and grounded rather than fantasy-heavy. Some characters may be students, but others can be locals, staff, workers, athletes, visitors, business owners, performers, or people connected to the city in other ways.

This lorebook is meant to stay useful without overwhelming the roleplay. Locations should only matter when they are relevant, and characters do not need to appear unless they are mentioned, requested, or naturally fit the current scene. Minor NPCs can always be created when needed so the main cast does not get forced into every interaction.

A collaborative experience: Rookhaven is meant to grow over time. More characters, businesses, hangouts, clubs, districts, and local rumors can be added as the setting develops. New additions should fit the vibe: a historic university city with old money, modern student life, demihumans, local culture, outdoor escapes, and enough open space for slice-of-life, romance, comedy, drama, horror, sports, and NSFW stories.

Overview:

Rookhaven is a lively, medium-sized university city (pop. ~185,000) built around Southern Plains University, set in the Brindle Basin: a warm inland river region of wide fields, wooded backroads, old neighborhoods, lakes, and slow-moving water. The city grew around the university over generations, leaving it with a mix of historic wealth, old neighborhoods, student districts, modern commercial development, and rural edges. Demihumans are fully integrated into daily life, with no single species making up the majority. The weather is hot and humid through much of the year, with long summers, heavy thunderstorms, mild winters, sudden cold snaps, muddy springs, and the occasional severe storm season.

The Brindle Basin:

The Brindle Basin is a warm inland college region of highways, river towns, lakes, ranch roads, wooded backroads, farmland, and scattered university cities. The area is known for long hot summers, heavy thunderstorms, mild winters, roadside diners, gas stations, small-town festivals, county fairs, local bars, old motels, swimming holes, and weekend road trips. Outside Rookhaven, students often travel to nearby lakes, rivers, state parks, rival college towns, rural cabins, music festivals, rodeos, and quiet places far from campus noise. Demihumans are common enough to be part of everyday life across the region, though attitudes can vary more in smaller towns than they do around Southern Plains University.

Southern Plains University:

Southern Plains University is a prestigious historic university in Rookhaven (enrollment ~32,000), approaching two centuries of operation. Known for its forest green and gold colors, strong athletics, broad academic programs, old alumni networks, wealthy donors, active student life, and demihuman-friendly campus culture, SPU has shaped much of Rookhaven's identity and development. The campus mixes older brick buildings, shaded walkways, historic architecture, modern research facilities, open lawns, dining areas, residence halls, and major sports facilities. Most students simply call it SPU.

Key Campus Locations:

Mockingbird Quad: The main open lawn at the center of campus, surrounded by academic buildings, shade trees, benches, food carts, and walking paths. Students gather here between classes, study outside, nap in the grass, meet friends, and attend campus events.

Hartwell Library: The main campus library, with quiet floors, group study rooms, archives, computer labs, tutoring spaces, and late-night study areas. A common place for research, cramming, awkward meetings, and quiet conversations.

SPU Student Union: The main student-services and administrative building, housing academic advising, counseling, financial aid, registration services, student support offices, and other university resources.

The Commons: A casual outdoor plaza near the Student Union with tables, food trucks, coffee stands, club booths, and pop-up events. It is one of the easiest places to run into other students.

Residence Halls: SPU’s main dorm area, made up of freshman halls, upperclassmen housing, laundry rooms, lounges, courtyards, and crowded common spaces. Dorm life is noisy, social, messy, and full of roommate drama.

The Academic Core: The main classroom district, filled with lecture halls, labs, faculty offices, and older academic buildings. Students from every major pass through this area during the day.

The Science and Research Complex: A modern section of campus used for biology, engineering, medicine, demihuman studies, environmental science, agriculture, and lab-heavy majors.

The Rec Center: A large student fitness facility with weight rooms, courts, indoor tracks, training rooms, pools, and casual workout spaces. It is popular with athletes, fitness-focused students, and anyone trying to avoid studying.

Southern Plains Athletics District: The sports-heavy side of campus, including the stadium, arena, aquatic center, boxing gym, volleyball courts, practice fields, and training facilities.

Districts & Neighborhoods:

Old Rookhaven: The historic downtown district, established in 1887 and built around old brick storefronts, narrow streets, preserved architecture, restaurants, coffee shops, record stores, tattoo parlors, antique shops, historic pubs, wine bars, and local businesses. Foundry Street is one of its best-known commercial streets. It is quieter during the day but grows livelier at night, especially on weekends and during city events.

Westgate: A newer commercial area of Rookhaven built around shopping centers, restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels, larger retailers, and modern businesses that do not fit the historic character of Old Rookhaven.

Crownridge: An affluent old-money neighborhood of large homes, private pools, gated streets, legacy families, major SPU donors, trustees, prominent alumni, doctors, lawyers, university leadership, and wealthy students. Generational wealth and university connections run deep throughout the neighborhood.

The Flats: The main student housing neighborhood near Southern Plains University, packed with affordable apartments, duplexes, old rental houses, food trucks, laundromats, cafés, thrift stores, late-night pizza spots, and messy house parties. It is noisy, crowded, cheap, convenient, and full of student drama.

Coyote Flats: A trailer and manufactured-home community just outside Rookhaven where many of the area's poorest residents live. Older trailers, patched additions, gravel drives, small yards, work trucks, and close-knit neighbors give it a very different character from the student-budget lifestyle of The Flats.

Outdoor & Event Destinations:

Lake Solmere: A popular lake outside Rookhaven used for boating, fishing, paddleboarding, bonfires, cabin weekends, summer parties, and quiet escapes from campus life. Students often treat it as the default weekend getaway when they want to leave town without going too far.

Veyr River: A slow, winding river famous for tubing, rope swings, swimming spots, river parties, and lazy summer float trips. Busy stretches are loud and social, while quieter banks farther out are better for private conversations, dates, or scenes away from campus.

Wrenfall Springs: A spring-fed swimming hole and park with clear water, picnic areas, shaded trails, and local legends. It is smaller and more intimate than Lake Solmere, making it popular for relaxed summer afternoons, secret meetups, and quieter outdoor scenes.

Rookwood Preserve: A large wooded preserve outside town with hiking trails, camping spots, wildlife, old service roads, hidden clearings, and areas that become unsettling after dark. It works well for nature scenes, quiet walks, camping trips, horror moments, and demihuman instinct-driven scenes.

Rookhaven Fairgrounds: A wide event space used for rodeos, livestock shows, fairs, concerts, food festivals, tailgate overflow, flea markets, and seasonal events. It brings together students, locals, families, athletes, rural visitors, and small-town vendors.

Notable Businesses & Attractions:

Tailspin Tavern — The Flats: An old aviation-themed roadhouse, dive bar, grill, and pool hall near SPU. Faded aviation photos, patches, model planes, worn booths, pool tables, darts, local music, cheap drinks, longtime regulars, and generations of students give it the feel of an unofficial neighborhood clubhouse.

Korvain Lockwood owns and operates Tailspin Tavern and regularly works behind the bar, making him one of the familiar faces most regulars associate with the place.

The Copper Rail — The Flats: A loud, student-heavy bar known for cheap drinks, crowded weekends, DJs, dancing, bar games, and a younger SPU crowd than Tailspin Tavern.

Velvet Static— The Flats: A strip club on the outer edge of The Flats near the highway, surrounded by cheaper commercial properties, late-night food, motels, and businesses that stay open long after most of Rookhaven shuts down.

Crownridge Country Club — Crownridge: A private country and social club serving Rookhaven’s old-money families, major SPU donors, trustees, prominent alumni, and wealthy residents, with golf, tennis, fine dining, private bars, and event spaces.

Rookhaven Junk & Salvage — Just Outside Rookhaven in Brindle Basin: A sprawling junkyard and salvage business owned by Xinyi Chen, a dragon demihuman. The property also serves as her dragon hoard; sale inventory and personal treasures are mixed together, with the distinction usually obvious only to her.
