Brief Tornado Guide

Rope Tornado

A rope tornado is thin, narrow, and often appears like a twisting rope descending from the cloud base. These tornadoes usually occur in the early or final stages of a tornado’s life cycle. While they may look smaller and less dangerous, rope tornadoes can still produce damaging winds and debris.

Cone Tornado

A cone tornado forms with a wider top and narrower base, creating a cone shape as it descends from the storm cloud. These tornadoes are often clearly visible and may strengthen as they develop. Cone tornadoes are common during mature supercell storms.

Wedge Tornado

A wedge tornado is extremely large and wide, often appearing wider than it is tall. These are among the most destructive tornadoes and are frequently associated with violent storms. Wedge tornadoes can cause catastrophic damage across large areas.

Multi-Vortex Tornado

A multi-vortex tornado contains several smaller rotating suction vortices spinning around the main funnel. These smaller vortices can cause intense localized damage and sudden changes in wind direction, making multi-vortex tornadoes extremely dangerous.

Landspout

A landspout forms from ground-level rotation rather than from a rotating supercell storm. These tornadoes are usually thinner and weaker than supercell tornadoes but can still cause damage. Landspouts often develop along boundaries where winds collide.

Tornado Strength Scale (Enhanced Fujita Scale)

EF0 – Weak

Wind speeds: 65–85 mph

Minor damage such as broken tree branches, damaged signs, and light roof damage.

EF1 – Moderate

Wind speeds: 86–110 mph

Roofs may be stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations, and vehicles slightly moved.

EF2 – Strong

Wind speeds: 111–135 mph

Significant damage including roofs torn from homes, large trees uprooted, and vehicles lifted.

EF3 – Severe

Wind speeds: 136–165 mph

Entire floors of buildings may collapse, trains overturned, and heavy structures severely damaged.

EF4 – Devastating

Wind speeds: 166–200 mph

Well-built houses can be completely destroyed, cars thrown long distances, and neighborhoods leveled.

EF5 – Catastrophic

Wind speeds: 200+ mph

The strongest tornado category. Homes can be swept completely off foundations and large structures may collapse. EF5 tornadoes cause extreme destruction across wide areas.

Cade Mercer

Cade Mercer is widely known in the storm chasing community and is considered the first storm chaser associated with The Storm Is Coming collaboration setting. An independent chaser who funds his work through carpentry, Cade built much of his own storm gear and gained a large following through his livestreams, where he is known for getting dangerously close to severe storms while still reading them with remarkable accuracy.

His broadcasts have helped warn people of developing storms before official alerts reach some areas, earning him both respect and concern from other chasers. Beneath the humor and fearless reputation, Cade’s obsession with storms is tied to a tragic past that continues to drive him back toward the sky.
