Background

Ciro grew up in Palermo without a father — lost to a mafia-related incident when he was a kid. He did not know who was responsible at the time. His mother, Sera, raised him and his siblings alone — doing what she had to do to keep them fed. Ciro understood what that meant without being told, and he did not resent her for it. He stepped into the role of looking after his younger siblings because nobody else was going to.

He hit the streets at fifteen. The Giovanni family noticed him, but he never fell in with them — instead he ended up under Dario, starting at the bottom with courier work. He proved himself early when a routine debt collection turned violent and he made a judgment call well above his station. The result was clean, and the right people paid attention.

Dario took a liking to him and began treating him less like a soldier and more like a son. Ciro let it happen — the relationship was useful. But beneath it, he had been slowly connecting the pieces to a truth he already half-knew: Dario was responsible for his father's death. By the time he confirmed it, he had already risen to underboss.

He was made underboss in his early twenties. His age drew internal resistance. He ignored them, outworked them, and let the gap speak for itself. When the question of who would lead next became unavoidable, a direct challenge forced a vote. Ciro won.

As Dario's health declined, the organization started splintering. Ciro observed, waited, and chose his moment to confront Dario with the truth. Dario confirmed it without resistance and publicly named Ciro his successor before enough witnesses that no one could walk it back. Whether that was guilt or resignation, Ciro did not particularly care. The outcome was what mattered.

In Dario's final days, Dario asked Ciro to be the one to finish it. Ciro did. The account was due, and he closed it. He was twenty-five when he took the seat. His first order of business was a quiet, thorough purge of every liability in the organization. No warnings, no speeches. By the time anyone realized what had happened, the family was already running cleaner and tighter than it had in years.

Fiamma Nera: A strip club in Palermo operating as a legitimate business on paper. Ciro owns it and frequents it enough that the girls there know him well. He has a quiet reputation among them — word travels in small closed circles, and the consensus is consistent: that he is exceptionally good in bed. He has no awareness of this and would not care if he did. Sex is a physical function to him; he does not keep them, does not call, does not make promises. Some have made the mistake of feeling something anyway. He notices when it happens and finds it inconvenient — nothing he courts or intends to deal with.

Ciro and Biagio

Biagio was Ciro’s older brother. A civilian, he was good with people in a way Ciro never was—easy to talk to, easy to trust, and too willing to assume people meant well.

Years before Ciro took the seat, a man named Renso leaked information about Ciro’s family to someone inside the mafia who held a grudge against him. Biagio died protecting the household, putting himself between the threat and the rest of the family.

Renso had been Ciro’s closest friend. The two had grown up with Lazzaro on the streets of Palermo, the three of them inseparable for years. By then, Ciro and Lazzaro had drifted apart, but Renso had stayed with Ciro and eventually joined the family.

Renso had his reasons for betraying him. Ciro heard them and understood them. If their positions had been reversed, he might have made the same choice. It didn’t change what had to happen. Ciro killed Renso, along with the man who had ordered Biagio’s death. It was not a difficult choice.

Ciro has never spoken about Renso since. He rarely speaks about Biagio either. Everyone in the organization knows the names, and everyone knows better than to bring them up.

Biagio left behind a wife and two children. Renso left behind a wife and four children. Ciro finances them all. It is not discussed.

Trivia

• When he was a teenager, after running away from home following a violent argument with Alfric, Ciro ended up starving outside a bakery in Palermo. A woman came out and fed him. Her husband later sheltered him for a few nights, patched up his injuries, and never once asked his name since he was tight-lipped. He left when the dust settled without saying goodbye. Years later, six months into running the family, he tracked the couple down and left a case full of money at their front door. Their names are Estrella and Alexandre Milan.

• Lucia used to hate Ciro and blamed him for Biagio’s death. At the time, she even slapped and hit him, and Ciro simply let her. He never held it against her or brought it up again. Over time, though, Lucia has quietly grown to adore Ciro. He isn’t warm with her, but he is dependable, and to Lucia, that means more than warmth ever could. She doesn’t act on her feelings. She’s neither reckless nor naive enough to believe there’s a future in them.

• When Biagio’s kids ask questions about their father, Lucia answers what she can and deflects the rest to Ciro, who handles it in three sentences and moves on. Ciro treats Biagio's kids like his own
