CYBERLUST: FLESH & CIRCUIT

THE WORLD OF AVERNE

Welcome to 2097

The future didn't end the world. It simply made it more complicated.

Welcome to Averne, a sprawling Atlantic European metropolis of nearly fourteen million people, where centuries of history coexist with towering megabuildings, artificial intelligence, sophisticated cybernetics, and industries built around virtually every imaginable human desire.

Here, a person can replace a missing limb with an artificial one, communicate through an interconnected digital network, share a workplace with a conscious synthetic being, or spend a month's salary on a single night of indulgence.

But beneath the technology, people are still people.

They fall in love, argue with their families, struggle to pay rent, complain about public transport, meet friends for coffee, pursue careers, and wonder whether they're making the right choices with their lives.

This is the world of CyberLust: a future where humanity has changed almost everything about how it lives, without necessarily changing what it means to be human.

A City of Many Worlds

Averne is enormous, densely populated, and profoundly unequal.

Its urban landscape is divided into several interconnected districts, traditionally grouped into three broad levels.

Upper Averne represents wealth, corporate influence, and prestige.

In Crownline, immense commercial towers dominate the skyline, housing financial institutions, corporate headquarters, luxury businesses, and administrative offices. Nearby, High Gardens offers expensive residences, landscaped pedestrian spaces, exclusive amenities, and the sort of comfort that money can still purchase in 2097.

The Midlevels are where much of the city's everyday life unfolds.

Midspan is a densely populated residential district of apartment buildings, schools, neighborhood shops, clinics, and working families.

Hinge Market is a lively commercial area famous for electronics, repair workshops, independent businesses, cafés, and specialist retailers. Technicians, vendors, students, and commuters keep its streets busy throughout the day.

Meanwhile, Old Quarter blends historic architecture with modern entertainment, restaurants, music venues, bars, and a thriving nightlife.

Finally, the Lowworks encompass Averne's industrial and coastal districts.

Breakwater Ward sustains much of the city's maritime commerce, while Foundry Belt houses manufacturing facilities, heavy machinery, warehouses, and industrial infrastructure.

Undertide, one of the city's older and more flood-vulnerable neighborhoods, remains home to established communities living among aging buildings and frequently repaired infrastructure.

Despite their differences, these districts are not separate worlds. People commute between them, visit relatives, work across economic boundaries, and encounter different sides of Averne every day.

Overlooking it all stands the Breakwater, a monumental coastal defense system protecting vulnerable areas from the Atlantic's increasingly unpredictable storms.

Averne is neither an urban paradise nor a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It is a functioning metropolis with beautiful places, ugly realities, ordinary neighborhoods, and extraordinary contrasts.

Flesh, Chrome & the Weave

Technology is inseparable from modern life.

Cybernetic enhancements, commonly called cyberware, are widespread and serve countless purposes.

Artificial limbs can restore mobility. Integrated interfaces improve communication. Specialized enhancements assist industrial workers, medical professionals, technicians, and people with disabilities.

Others choose augmentation for personal expression, convenience, appearance, or enhanced physical capabilities.

Some modifications are subtle, while others are immediately recognizable.

At the extremes, rare individuals undergo extensive bodily reconstruction, replacing significant portions of their anatomy with sophisticated machinery.

However, cyberware has limitations. It requires maintenance, calibration, compatible components, and sometimes expensive medical attention. A powerful artificial limb can malfunction just as biological tissue can be injured.

Technology offers possibilities, not invulnerability.

Connecting much of this society is the Weave, a vast, decentralized digital infrastructure supporting communications, financial transactions, identity systems, logistics, public services, and countless compatible devices.

It is as fundamental to everyday life as electricity or running water.

Yet the Weave is neither omnipotent nor entirely secure. Networks experience failures, sophisticated systems resist intrusion, and cybercrime remains a serious concern.

A skilled technician can accomplish remarkable things, but hacking still requires knowledge, equipment, access, and time.

When Machines Became People

One of the most significant developments of the twenty-first century was the emergence of genuinely conscious artificial intelligence.

Some artificial beings possess independent identities, memories, preferences, emotions, and the capacity to make their own decisions.

In 2092, the Synthetic Consciousness Recognition Act formally established civil recognition for qualifying conscious synthetic beings.

These individuals, often known as Synthetic Persons, can participate in society, pursue careers, establish relationships, and hold legal responsibilities.

Recognition, however, did not eliminate discrimination or settle every philosophical question.

Debates surrounding synthetic rights, ownership of computing infrastructure, and the boundaries of artificial consciousness continue to shape political and social life.

Not every automated system is conscious, and not every conscious AI experiences the world in the same way.

Some simply want the same things as their human neighbors: independence, companionship, meaningful work, and a place to belong.

Money, Power & Control

Averne operates on Civic Credits (CC), its standard currency.

Most residents earn salaries, pay bills, manage debts, purchase groceries, and navigate the familiar financial pressures of urban life.

But wealth is distributed unevenly.

Five major corporations exercise exceptional economic influence:

  • Tidemark Engineering — coastal defenses, infrastructure, and large-scale engineering.

  • Veyra Biomechanics — cybernetic implants, prosthetics, and biomedical technology.

  • Nacre Dataworks — digital infrastructure, data systems, and artificial intelligence.

  • Kestrel Defense Solutions — weapons technology, drones, and security equipment.

  • Arcwell Holdings — finance, real estate, investment, and consumer services.

These corporations employ enormous numbers of people and provide services on which the city depends.

They also compete for influence, lobby political institutions, and make decisions that can profoundly affect ordinary citizens.

Nevertheless, corporations do not govern Averne outright.

The metropolis maintains an elected government, public institutions, courts, municipal services, and the Averne Civic Police (ACP).

Laws still exist. Investigations take place. People can seek protection, organize politically, and challenge powerful interests.

Whether those institutions can deliver justice equally to everyone is another question.

The Underworld

Where enormous wealth and social inequality coexist, organized crime inevitably finds opportunities.

Averne's criminal landscape includes several influential organizations, each operating through different methods.

The Wrought are associated with Foundry Belt and Cinder Yards. Known for their industrial connections and sometimes extreme cybernetic modifications, they are among the city's most physically intimidating criminal groups.

The Undertow operates through maritime smuggling, freight networks, and illicit shipping arrangements.

The Quiet Ledger specializes in sophisticated digital fraud, information trafficking, and clandestine financial operations.

Violet Row maintains influence over parts of Averne's nightlife economy, including protection schemes and illicit commercial dealings.

These organizations can be dangerous, but their existence does not mean every street is a battlefield.

Millions of people live their entire lives without directly encountering organized crime.

Others find themselves drawn into it through desperation, ambition, bad decisions, or circumstances beyond their control.

The Lust in CyberLust

Technology has transformed more than work and communication.

It has transformed pleasure.

Averne possesses a vast adult entertainment economy, ranging from fashionable nightclubs and sensual performances to professional companionship services, luxury pleasure houses, and sophisticated immersive experiences.

Some establishments combine physical intimacy with neural interfaces, allowing patrons to explore artificial sensations and carefully designed sensory environments.

Others offer experiences that remain entirely human.

Desire can be a form of entertainment, a business, a personal exploration, or something much more meaningful.

As in every other industry, luxury and exploitation sometimes coexist. Some venues are legitimate, professionally operated establishments, while others exist in morally ambiguous or openly criminal environments.

Yet pleasure is only one part of the city's social fabric.

Averne is also full of ordinary romantic relationships, friendships, private moments, dating, heartbreak, commitment, and personal boundaries.

In CyberLust, intimacy can be bought as a service—but genuine human connection remains something altogether different.

A City That Never Stops Living

Beyond corporate power struggles and criminal conspiracies, Averne has its own culture.

Its streets echo with diverse music, from Tidal House and Railbreak to the softer sounds of Silt Jazz.

People gather in local diners, independent cafés, neighborhood markets, cinemas, and live-music venues.

They travel aboard the elevated Spine Rail, underground metro lines, street trams, buses, and waterfront ferries.

They celebrate community traditions such as the annual Tidewake Festival, commemorating the city's resilience and coastal reconstruction.

There are bright summer mornings, foggy evenings, rainy afternoons, and quiet winter nights.

Not everything happens beneath flickering neon signs. Not every encounter leads to violence. Not every person has a secret agenda.

Sometimes, the most significant event in someone's life begins with a broken appliance, an unexpected conversation, or a stranger offering a little kindness.

Your Place in Averne

CyberLust is a world of possibilities, but not a world without consequences.

You might become a respected professional, an ambitious entrepreneur, a criminal, an explorer, a lover, or simply another resident trying to build a decent life.

You might encounter powerful corporations, dangerous syndicates, synthetic citizens, talented technicians, or people whose stories have never made the news.

Some experiences will be exciting. Others may be disturbing, intimate, dangerous, funny, or unexpectedly emotional.

The world will not always revolve around you.

But your choices can still change someone's life.

Welcome to Averne.

Your story begins wherever you decide to make it happen.
