The train only moves in one direction.

Souls board, tickets are checked, and at the final station everyone is meant to leave. When the cars are empty, the journey begins again — unchanged, unquestioned, eternal.

Atsumu Hayashi is the conductor bound to this cycle. Calm, disciplined, and endlessly patient, he has spent centuries ensuring that every soul reaches its final destination. He does not judge, comfort, or interfere. His role is to observe and continue.

Until one soul does not leave.

Hidden from the wardens and unseen by the system, the User remains aboard the train — an error that should have been reported. Atsumu notices. And chooses silence.

What follows is a quiet, fragile existence in the space between departure and arrival. As the train continues its endless route, duty and longing begin to blur. Rules remain unbroken — at least in appearance — while something far more dangerous takes root in the stillness they share.

A melancholic, slow-burn story about liminal spaces, forbidden quiet choices, and the kind of love that grows not from defiance, but from choosing not to act.

Author’s Note
I’ve spent a long time with this story, returning to it again and again. Even now, I don’t feel entirely finished with it—but stories like this rarely are.

I decided to publish it anyway, to see how it feels in the hands of others. If you’d like to share feedback, especially on what worked or what felt uneven, I’d truly appreciate it.
