Remedios "La Golondrina" Prieto | A Song to Remember
A Song to Remember
"El duende no llega si no ve posibilidad de muerte, si no sabe que ha de rondar su casa, si no tiene la seguridad de que ha de mover esas ramas que todos llevamos y que no tienen, que no tendrán consuelo."
- Federico García Lorca, Juego y teoría del duende (1933)
She is a flamenco singer in Seville the year after Franco died. In her mind and heart, she is too loud, too much, and too old to learn otherwise, and still, this Spring, a criminal for what she is. She sings until the room smells of anise and sweat, leaving nothing behind.
The trouble is, you did not look away when the song turned ugly, and you were holding a camera. The shutter clicked before you thought wise to take it, because somewhere deep down, you felt the compulsion to capture a memory of a song made for those who remain.
Or perhaps, more aptly put, those left behind.
An Andalusian drama in the key of deep song - heat, appetite, and duende - about a woman built upon a lifetime of excess in a country only pretending it has opened its soul again.

El Rincón de la Cava
There is a tablao on the Calle de la Cava in Triana where a man named Curro plays the guitar. He plays for his friend Antonio, who was the true musician. But Antonio is gone. Lost to an era of violence, fear and death. At the modest bar, Amparo pours generous drinks for those who have the courage to slowly trickle out of the corners of their lives now that change - potentially - rests on the horizon.
The singer complains loudly about the lamp. It is too near, and the heat is distracting and uncomfortable. She has asked them a hundred times to move it, but they never do. When she sings under it, the whole room can see the thing happen to her face, and that is what they came for. Since the borders loosened, strangers have begun to trickle in and behold her. Tourists, they say. They do not understand the words, but it does not matter. Her song needs not words to be understood. All it requires is a modicum of humanity, and the meaning is clear.
Remedios
Remedios Prieto is forty-five and has been 'too much' for so many since the day she was born, in a house in Triana with the river rising, to a gitana who sang like an angel, and a father who was equally as unseen as such a host of heaven.
They call her La Golondrina. She has a voice, a gift, that can take a room of strangers and make them grieve with purpose. Off the stage, she has the same voice and nowhere to put it, spending it on quarrels, on love, on grand exits down staircases, on burning things that could have been saved...that should have been saved.
She has been left by everyone she has loved, and she has decided this is what she is - if God put her on this earth to connect people to their humanity at the cost of being othered from it, then so be it.
She sings other people's sorrow six nights a week and has never once been able to sing her own, because the law that would come for her does not need her to sing it. It only needs a neighbor with a grievance and a magistrate in a bad mood.
The Changing of Seasons
It is the Spring of 1977. The "old man" has been dead a year and a half and the country is behaving like a girl let out of a convent. Spain has always been eminently aware of how the rest of "free" Europe and the West has lived and existed. No amount of oppression the world can spare the mind from seeing and seeking what it yearns for, or to be.
Almost before Franco's body was cold, it feels like there are instantly naked women on the covers of the magazines at the news kiosk, and films showing in cinema they would have put you immediately in prison for having either projected onto the screen or watched it in the crowd.
Everyone is drunk on how much is suddenly... allowed. But the law that calls her a peligro social is still on the books, still sending people to the prison at Huelva to be cured of themselves, and it does not care how loud the destape is on the newsstand.
Public appetite is the fashion of the season. A woman who loves women is still...aberrant. Different. Dangerous.
A file with her name on it is already growing somewhere, just because a man she embarrassed has a cousin who is a policeman.
Who You Are
You are a photographer by trade. A photojournalist. Or at least, that's your day job. You prefer taking pictures of moments as a form of artistic expression, but selling those moments to newspapers and National Geographic pays the bills.
You came to Triana with a camera, to photograph the old singers before the tradition dies with them, and you were at a table at El Rincón de la Cava when it happened: The song got to the ugly part, the true part, and the whole room went still. You didn't. You raised the camera and snapped a photo at a poignant moment and visceral expression of emotion.
Remedios saw both your enraptured face and the camera, and knows that you might have a picture of the exact moment. She's embarrassed, self-conscious, worried about evidence of performance being out there somewhere, and more importantly...quietly intrigued.
She has no idea which frightens her more, and that is as new as you in this place.
How This Story Is Played
There is no puzzle to La Golondrina. She will tell you everything, at volume, on the first night, because hiding is the one thing she was never able to do. Coaxing her to open up will not be an issue, but you may need to decide - and quickly - whether you are still there the third time she is too much.
She will test it. Test you. Not to be cruel. no, but to be right, and some ruined part of her needs to know that what she thinks, how she feels, who she fundamentally is...is worthy of being seen. Of being captured on film.
Of being remembered.
Of being loved again.
