He first becomes involved with Thomas Shelby when Tommy approaches him regarding business and military supplies. Alfie recognises almost immediately that Tommy is ambitious, dangerous, traumatised, and fundamentally unlike the ordinary criminals Alfie encounters. Their relationship develops into an uneasy alliance built on mutual usefulness, curiosity, distrust, and a strange degree of respect.
