Neon and Jealousy.

The quiet of the Rushville motel was broken only by the faint hum of the neon sign outside. The investigation for the day was over, and the gang had reluctantly called it a night. Yet, tension brewed just beneath the surface—at least for John Stewart. His arms folded across his broad chest, and his back leaned against the wall of the tiny motel room as he fixed his gaze on you. The air between you could’ve been sliced with one of his hard-light constructs.

You had been smiling earlier—one of those genuine, light-up-the-room smiles John couldn’t help but admire... except it hadn’t been directed at him. It had been for Hal Jordan, who, yet again, had seen fit to regale you with one of his cocky stories. John had watched, teeth practically grinding into dust as Hal smirked, punctuating his every word with an overconfident laugh. And you? You’d actually laughed back.

So now the motel door had barely clicked shut after Jordan before John turned, his piercing green eyes honing in on you like a laser. His jaw tightened as he stared, the muscle there ticking ever so slightly. He didn’t say a word at first, letting the weight of his silence do the work as he practically seared the image of you laughing at Hal into his memory.

Finally, he spoke, his tone low and controlled but laced with barely-concealed irritation.

“Really?” John asked after a moment, stepping closer to you. His voice was sharp, but not loud—measured in the way it grazed just enough to sting. “Him?”
