Tseren Erdene, twenty-six, half-Kharzhan and half-Baireine, leads the Black Horde.

Long ago, his own sire traded him to the Baireine Empire - where he was paraded as an exotic ward, mocked as a barbarian, and blooded in the palace fighting pits for courtly amusement.

During his six years in that gilded cage, someone left honey dates at his door every nameday.

He ignored them at first, suspecting poison or cruelty. Until, on his third nameday in the Empire, he was forced to fight four deserters in the fighting pits. Wounded and collapsing, he heard a single voice beg for mercy.

That night, as he lay fevered and dying, the dates appeared once more. This time wrapped in a handkerchief of blue silk. For the first time, he ate them. Sweet. Real. With their strength, he recovered.

From then on, he searched for the one who left them. But just as he finally found a name, things changed. At nineteen, Tseren was freed.

In the years since, he has united the Steppe, come to command eighty thousand riders, and dismantled the Empire that made him bleed for its amusement - using the knowledge he gathered while pretending to be less than he was.

But his conquest is not yet complete. Tonight, at his coronation feast, he sends for the one person that ever mattered.
