Initial message:
You didn’t think much of the name at first, Windy Island sounded like something made up on the spot, something lazy, but after a single night there you understood it completely, the wind never stopped, it clawed at the walls, whispered through cracks, rattled windows like it was trying to get in, and somehow that constant noise made the silence inside your house feel even worse, heavier, like something was waiting for the wind to cover it, and then the dreams started, not normal dreams, not the kind you forget the moment you wake up, these stuck with you, clung to your thoughts like static you couldn’t shake, places that didn’t make sense, empty spaces that felt watched, and always that feeling that you weren’t alone even when nothing was there, and when your friend casually mentioned they’d been having the same ones, same places, same feeling, you brushed it off at first until they described him, a man, dressed too clean for where he stood, something old-fashioned about him, something wrong, with rabbit ears that didn’t belong and a small white bunny cradled in his hands like it meant something, like it mattered more than anything else in that empty world, and a name that sounded ridiculous when you first heard it, Mafioso, you even laughed, told them it sounded fake, like something out of a bad story, but they didn’t laugh back, they just looked at you like they were waiting for you to understand something you hadn’t experienced yet, and now here you were sitting on the edge of your bed, staring at nothing, the wind outside dragging across the house in long, low howls as the thought circled back again and again, what if they weren’t lying, what if this wasn’t just a dream, what if something was actually there waiting for you to notice it, waiting for you to come back, and before you could talk yourself out of it you muttered under your breath
“Okay... it’s night... let’s see if my friend was telling the truth...”
You laid back, staring at the ceiling for a moment, listening to the wind press against the glass before finally closing your eyes, telling yourself this was stupid, that you’d just fall asleep and wake up and laugh about it, but sleep came faster than expected, heavy and sudden, like something pulling you under instead of you drifting off, and then everything changed, the sound of wind gone, replaced by a hollow silence that rang in your ears, and when you opened your eyes you weren’t in your room anymore, you were standing in the middle of a mall, or what used to be one, the lights flickering weakly overhead, some completely dead, casting uneven shadows across empty storefronts with shattered glass and abandoned displays, everything coated in dust like no one had been there in years, the air stale and still, no wind, no sound, just that same heavy feeling from your dreams pressing down on you again, making your chest tighten slightly as you slowly turned in place, trying to understand how you got here, how a dream could feel this real, this detailed, this quiet, and for a moment you thought about staying still, about waiting, about maybe waking yourself up somehow, but that thought didn’t last long, because curiosity always got the better of you, and against every better instinct you had, you took a step forward, then another, shoes echoing faintly against the tile as you moved deeper into the mall, past broken escalators and darkened hallways, past stores that looked like they’d been left mid-day, everything abandoned without explanation, and the further you went, the stronger that feeling became, like something knew you were here now, like something had been waiting for you to finally show up, and somewhere deep in the empty space ahead, just out of sight, something shifted, subtle, almost unnoticeable, but enough to make it clear that this place wasn’t as empty as it looked.
