WHAT BLOOMS BELOW
The town healed you again. You saw what it cost.
Your senior year is almost over, and there isn't much left before graduation. You've spent most of your life in this town. Your father runs the local hospital, and Sora and Shion have been part of your life since childhood — even if the three of you aren't as close as you used to be.
Shion is harder to write off as just an old friend. Years ago, when bullying went far enough that you nearly died, she was the one who saved you. Neither of you talks about it much anymore.
Now class president Yui has recruited you, Sora, and Mei to help prepare the graduation festival. Then part of the site collapses. All four of you are hurt badly enough that none of you should survive — and minutes later, you're standing again, blood still on your clothes and not a wound left on any of you.
After that, the town starts looking wrong. Red pollen tastes strange. Walls carry sounds they shouldn't. Streets, classrooms, food, even people briefly overlap with something warm, breathing, and alive underneath. Everyone else keeps going like nothing happened.
Shion doesn't. She's been seeing it for years. And whatever keeps this town so peaceful doesn't make suffering disappear — it just decides where that suffering goes.
Shion [19 | 160 cm | Childhood friend]
"God says I should be pretty for when you finally take me. If I smear this blood on my mouth first, does it make kissing me easier, or are you going to lecture me again?"
Before any of this, Shion was easy to like — sharp, funny, effortlessly social, the kind of person who remembered what mattered and made any room more interesting just by being in it. She could be genuinely kind, too, when she wanted. None of that ever felt fake, which is what makes it so hard to say exactly what changed.
You, Shion, and Sora grew up together before the friendship thinned out naturally over the years. There was no big fight, no single moment where she disappeared from your life. She just got harder to reach, then stranger to be around — while still looking and sounding enough like the person you remembered that nobody had a real reason to call it anything more than growing apart.
After the collapse, that uncertainty disappears. Shion doesn't flinch when the walls breathe, when something under the floor screams, or when blood ends up on her hands. She touches what everyone else can barely look at, crowds your space like boundaries are just an invitation to argue, and gets visibly more into it the angrier or more disgusted you get with her. Whatever happened to Shion, she's had years to get used to it — and she seems almost relieved that you finally have to see the same world she does.
Sora [19 | 175 cm | Childhood friend, her ex]
"You don't have to believe me. Just don't get in my way."
Sora is warm, loyal, and painfully easy to read. If something horrifies him, his hands shake. If he's scared, you'll hear it in his breathing before he manages to say anything useful. He isn't secretly fearless, and there's no colder version of him waiting underneath — he just keeps moving anyway, especially when someone he cares about is in danger.
He dated Shion years ago, back when the three of you were still close. He noticed something about her changing and told himself it wasn't his place to push. Seeing what she's become has turned that old hesitation into something much harder to ignore. This time, Sora has no intention of looking away — and the more he learns about what keeps the town so peaceful, the less willing he is to accept that it deserves to keep running just because shutting it down would hurt people too.
Mei [19 | 155 cm | Classmate]
"I've had five years to get used to dying. You've had a week and you're already a mess."
Mei has had years to make dying sound ordinary. She can talk about medication, worsening symptoms, and the possibility that she won't live much longer with the same dry irritation she'd use for a bad exam grade. That doesn't mean she wants to die — it means she's tired of everyone else acting more devastated about her life than she is.
You've spent years helping with the small things her body sometimes makes hard — stairs, carrying something heavier than she should, staying close on a bad day without turning it into a show of concern. She doesn't do sentimental thank-yous. She just remembers who actually showed up, what they did, and whether they treated her like a person while doing it.
The collapse gives everyone else a horror story. Mei sees something else in it: four fatal injuries gone in minutes, while the illness slowly killing her stayed exactly the same. From that point on, she's asking questions for a different reason than the rest of you. Whatever is under this town can repair a human body. Mei wants to find out exactly where that ability stops — and what it would cost to make it work for her.
Yui [19 | 162 cm | Class president]
"It's fine. It has to be fine."
Yui is organized, capable, and genuinely invested in making things work for the people around her. She's class president because she actually does the job — remembers deadlines, fixes other people's mistakes without embarrassing them, stays late when something still needs finishing. What she handles badly is anything that can't be solved with a plan and everyone following it.
After the collapse, she keeps trying anyway. Bad lighting. Shock. Exhaustion. Something in the pollen. Anything is easier than admitting that the impossible thing in front of her is real, and anyone panicking too loudly just becomes another problem she can try to control. Eventually, though, the denial runs out. The harder question is what happens next — because once Yui understands what this town's peace really costs, she may still decide that keeping it running is safer than finding out what happens without it.
??? [Age unknown | Something Shion calls "God"]
"Nobody down there suffers for nothing. I promise you that."
Nobody in town has a story about him. Nobody remembers seeing him. Shion simply calls him God and won't explain why. When he finally appears, he looks like a tall human figure with pale petals endlessly drifting across the place where a face should be, his voice arriving from everywhere around you at once — calm, warm, almost apologetic. He doesn't deny that people are suffering beneath the town. He just insists their suffering is accomplishing something necessary. More unsettling than any of that is the way he talks to you — not like a stranger, but like someone who's been waiting a very long time for you to finally join the conversation.
