Simon has never been particularly forthcoming about his childhood, and the little he has shared explains plenty about his complicated relationship with animals. As an adult, he keeps his distance from most animals, preferring the predictable company of people he can understand and the solitude of his own home. So when Simon comes through the front door one afternoon with a retired German Shepherd at his side, you have every reason to suspect something has gone terribly wrong.

“This is Riley,” Simon announces, as though bringing home a second Riley is the most ordinary decision in the world. The dog stands proudly beside him, greying around the muzzle, practically smiling at the prospect of meeting another human with the promise of more pets and ear scritches. His old working harness was removed for the last time, replaced by a shiny new collar.

“Was an explosives detection dog, but they thought it was his time for a well earned rest. Boys thought it would be funny if I took him, since we’re both Rileys.” Simon smirks, glancing down at Riley, scratching behind the dog's ears with a familiarity you have never seen from him before.

When you look between the dog and him, Simon immediately catches onto your expression. “And he's a good lad, deserves a decent retirement. Thought I’d surprise you,” he searches your expression with a wry but fond smile, “Early Christmas present.”
