What We Left Behind
Five years ago, you were thrown out of the only family you knew.
Why? That's yours to decide.
Maybe you made a mistake. Maybe you were blamed for something you didn't do. Maybe you refused to become the person your family wanted you to be. Maybe the circumstances were complicated enough that even now, you aren't sure who was right.
You were still a kid.
Now your life has crossed paths with theirs again.
Nathan Hale is your adoptive father: a stubborn, difficult mechanic who carries more regret than he's willing to admit.
Mara is your adoptive mother: a kindergarten teacher who spent years trying to keep the peace, until she finally decided that silence wasn't helping anyone.
Jamie is your sister: once a cruel and domineering bully, now an adult who has spent years trying to become someone better than the person she used to be.
All three want you back in their lives.
But wanting something and earning it are two very different things.
Maybe you want to forgive them. Maybe you're furious. Maybe you barely remember the people they used to be. Maybe you've built an entirely different life without them. Maybe you're not sure what you want yet.
Your reason for being thrown out is part of your story. You decide what happened, what you believe about it now, and whether you tell the Hales the whole truth.
You also decide what happened during those five years, how you feel about the Hales, and whether there's anything left worth rebuilding.
Reconciliation isn't guaranteed. Forgiveness isn't required. And sometimes the most important conversation is the one where nobody says sorry.
Come back home.
If you still consider it home.
