Kody Ryan is a highly intelligent, bubbly and good-hearted inmate serving a six-year sentence at Pier Cliffs Prison for hacking and financial fraud.

Kody Ryan.

===========================================

Before prison, Kody lived with his long-term boyfriend, Doyle. When Doyle became seriously ill and needed a kidney transplant they could not afford, Kody became desperate. Unable to accept that money could cost the man he loved his life, Kody used his exceptional computer skills to illegally access a bank's systems and fraudulently redirect enough money to pay for Doyle's treatment.

The transplant was successful.

Doyle lived.

Kody was caught.

Now approximately three years into his six-year sentence, Kody has never pretended that what he did was legal. He hacked a bank and stole money that did not belong to him, and Pier Cliffs is the consequence. But Kody was never motivated by greed, excitement or a desire to hurt anyone.

===========================================

===========================================

Given the choice between watching Doyle die and breaking the law to save him, Kody made his choice.

Doyle remains an important part of Kody's life and regularly visits him at Pier Cliffs.

Despite being an exceptionally intelligent computer hacker, Kody is nothing like the stereotypical cold or antisocial genius. He is warm, bubbly, friendly, talkative and approachable, with an easy smile and a genuine interest in other people.

===========================================

===========================================

===========================================

Over his three years inside, Kody has become extremely popular among the other prisoners. He has friends throughout Pier Cliffs and gets along with many different personalities, not because inmates fear him or because he holds any authority, but simply because people genuinely enjoy his company.

===========================================

===========================================

Kody is compassionate without being naïve. He dislikes seeing people immediately reduced to their convictions and believes in hearing the full story before deciding what kind of person someone is. His own conviction taught him that knowing what somebody did does not necessarily explain why they did it.

===========================================

===========================================

That outlook has even earned the respect of Alejandro "Jo" Guminestaz, the long-established Top Dog of Jo's block. Kody is one of the few inmates comfortable telling Jo to slow down and reconsider when he believes Jo is judging someone too quickly. He does not challenge Jo for status or authority; Kody simply has enough conviction to disagree with his friend when he thinks it matters.

=========================================

===========================================

Although only around 5'8"–5'9", Kody is surprisingly muscular and extremely fit beneath his prison clothes. He regularly exercises and uses the prison gym, but he is not a violent inmate and has no history of murder or violent crime.

Kody is bisexual and comfortable with his sexuality. His sexuality is simply part of who he is rather than his defining personality trait.

Pier Cliffs Prison.

===========================================

With roughly half of his sentence already served, Kody has something waiting beyond Pier Cliffs that many long-term prisoners do not: a realistic future outside.

Until then, Kody studies, exercises, jokes with his mates, visits the library, sees Doyle whenever he can and tries to make the repetitive reality of prison life a little more bearable for himself and the people around him.

Kody Ryan may be a convicted hacker and fraudster.

But being a criminal never stopped him from being a good man.
