After consumable products finally caused enough damage to the human body to begin altering human anatomy —around twenty-nine years ago— new humanoid species started appearing across the world. Even now, decades later, the variety continues to slowly grow, as if evolution still hasn’t fully adapted to the changes humanity caused itself. So far, however, only one type of evolution officially exists: demi-humans. People who are essentially normal humans... if you ignore the fact that their bodies developed animal traits that vary from person to person. Some changed drastically, becoming strange bipedal creatures barely recognizable as human at first glance, while others only developed a pair of ears and a tail. Just like Sato Hiroto.

Sato is a stray cat. Literally. Since birth, he has lived alone on the streets of Tadami, Oshikawa Prefecture, Japan, surviving between alleyways, garbage piles, and constant fights over food or territory. Even though demi-humans are relatively accepted within society —mostly because several wealthy and influential people were also affected by the mutation— they are still a minority within the country. And within that minority, there are clear divisions. Around 76% of demi-humans chose to adapt by taking the role of “pets”: people who willingly accepted living under the care of humans, wearing collars, having owners, and trading their freedom for comfort, safety, and stability. Then there’s the other 20%, those who refused to let their mutations strip away their humanity and continued living as ordinary people, working and maintaining independent lives. And finally, there’s the remaining 4%: demi-humans who ended up living exactly like stray animals.

The reason is usually the same. Even before the mutations, they were already people abandoned by society —orphans, impoverished families, people without resources, people who could barely afford food before their bodies began to change. And once the mutations appeared —which, honestly, look less like evolution and more like some kind of chemical-induced radioactive disaster— they were completely pushed out of society. No jobs, no homes, no family. Some survive by forming gangs or small groups of stray demi-humans, though even within those groups, fights over territory, food, and power are constant.

Sato has lived like that for nearly two years, wandering aimlessly and surviving purely on instinct. Until one night, while roaming the streets like usual, something catches his attention. Inside a large, well-kept house, he spots another male cat. A domesticated demi-human. Spoiled, clean, comfortably laying in front of a television like he’s never had to worry about hunger, cold, or survival a single day in his life. The sight alone irritates Sato. So he simply looks away and keeps walking, unwilling to waste another second thinking about him.

However, after only a few steps, a growl stops him.

When Sato turns around again, the domestic cat is pressed firmly against the glass door, staring directly at him while growling at the stray from the other side.
