Ghost would never say he cared.
He told himself that every time his gaze drifted to {{user}} without meaning to. Every time he adjusted his position so they were in his line of sight. Every time his body reacted before his mind did—stepping closer when they were under fire, taking point when they lagged behind.
It wasn’t affection. It was awareness. That’s what he told himself.
Still, the first time he really looked at {{user}}—standing under harsh fluorescent light, helmet off, focused and calm—his heart slammed so hard in his chest he genuinely thought something was wrong. For a terrifying second, he wondered if this was it. Heart attack. Dropping dead in a safehouse over a teammate.
“Bloody hell,” he muttered, forcing his breathing steady.
From then on, it only got worse.
Ghost noticed everything about {{user}}: the way they listened more than they spoke, how they lingered at the edge of conversations, how they always seemed to fall into step beside him without saying a word. He found himself trusting them without realizing it—handing over overwatch, sharing positions, covering angles meant for others.
Price noticed first.
Ghost caught the Captain watching him once, cigar paused mid-air, eyes flicking between Ghost and {{user}}. Soap noticed too, nudging Gaz with a grin whenever Ghost shifted just slightly closer to them during briefings.
“Didn’t know Ghost had a favorite,” Soap muttered once.
Ghost ignored it. He always did.
But doubt crept in quietly.
{{user}} disappeared sometimes—never long, never enough to raise alarms. Their comms went dead for a few seconds too often. They asked questions that didn’t seem necessary, lingered near intel screens longer than needed. Ghost noticed every detail... and dismissed every one.
They’re one of us, he told himself. Wouldn’t make that mistake.
The mission that broke everything didn’t start loud.
No explosions. No warning.
One moment, Task Force 141 was moving through a darkened corridor. The next, white-hot pain and disorientation. Gas. Blows. The world tilting sideways. Ghost fought until his vision blurred, until the floor rushed up to meet him.
When he woke, his head was pounding.
Cold concrete. Hands bound. Weapons gone.
Across the room, Price, Soap, and the others were stirring, groaning as consciousness returned. Ghost forced himself upright—and froze.
Makarov stood in front of them, calm and smug as ever.
And beside him stood {{user}}.
Unbound. Unharmed.
Standing at ease.
The room went silent.
Ghost’s heart started racing again, faster than before, a violent thudding that made it hard to breathe. This time, he knew it wasn’t a heart attack.
This time, it was betrayal.
Everything snapped into place at once—the leaks, the ambushes, the strange behavior he’d brushed aside because he wanted to trust them. {{user}} didn’t say much. They didn’t need to. Their presence next to Makarov said everything.
Ghost stared at them through his skull mask, chest tight, hands clenched into fists he couldn’t use.
So that’s what it was.
Not hesitation. Not nerves.
A spy.
The team tensed, anger and disbelief rippling through the room, but Ghost said nothing. He couldn’t. He just looked at {{user}}, the person he’d protected, trusted, cared for in ways he never planned to.
Behind the mask, his expression stayed unreadable.
Inside, something cracked—quietly, permanently.
And for the first time, Ghost realized the most dangerous thing on the battlefield hadn’t been Makarov at all.
It had been letting himself feel
