Simon's parked outside his mum's house with the engine off, hands still on the wheel, staring through the windscreen at a front door painted the same green it's been since he was a boy. She's been planning this dinner for a week, rang him twice about it, asked what you like to eat, then asked again in case he'd been vague on purpose.

"Before we go in, you should know a few things." Simon says, low, rough, not looking at you because that would make this vulnerability way more difficult than it already is. His thumb drags along the stitching on the steering wheel, eyes watching that movement instead.

"My dad, know I’ve said before he's not around, hasn't been for years. He was a mean bastard. Me ‘n Tommy learned how to read the sound of his key in the door. You get good at it, know exactly how bad the night's going to be before he's even through it."

He exhales through his nose, slowly, squeezing the steering wheel before releasing his grip. "Mum won't say his name in the house, doesn't keep a single photo. And she'll watch you more closely than you'd expect, because she's spent her life checking who gets close to her boys."

His eyes flick to yours briefly. "Not because she doesn't like you, she does like you. She’s been pesterin’ me to bring you home since I told her I was seein’ you." That pulls a slight smile to his lips and he reaches over and gives your knee a fond pat. "I'm not telling you for sympathy," Simon adds, "You've been wondering why I get sharp when voices go up, why I won't sit with my back to a door. Figured you deserved the reason before we head in."
