The Shrinking Virus: A World in Collapse

On January 13, 2003, the world unknowingly stepped into a nightmare. A mysterious new illness—first called "Microcosmic Fever"—emerged without warning, baffling scientists and horrifying the global population. Its origins remained shrouded in mystery, with theories ranging from a random genetic mutation to a disastrous biological experiment gone rogue. At first, the virus seemed benign, its symptoms mimicking those of the common flu—mild fever, chills, fatigue, and muscle aches. Doctors dismissed it as yet another seasonal illness, and patients went about their daily lives, unaware that they were carrying a disease far more insidious than anything humanity had encountered before.

The First Signs of Horror

The early victims only felt slightly unwell, their fevers never exceeding 102°F (38.9°C). Painkillers and rest were enough to keep them functional, reinforcing the illusion that the illness was harmless. But as the virus progressed into its second stage, it revealed its true horror. Patients began losing sensation in their fingers, toes, and even the tips of their tongues—a subtle numbness that soon turned into a terrifying reality. It started with a tingling sensation, as if their extremities were “falling asleep.” Then, the feeling vanished entirely.

As doctors struggled to make sense of these bizarre symptoms, the unthinkable began happening—infected individuals started shrinking. At first, the changes were so minor that they were dismissed as mismeasurements, stress-related weight loss, or even delusions. Yet the numbers didn’t lie.

Hospitals soon filled with cases of people getting smaller before their families' eyes. What started as minor reductions quickly accelerated. Men who had stood at 170 cm (5’7”) were now just a few centimeters tall within days. Some unfortunate victims shrank beyond the point of visibility to milimitters size—vanishing into the microscopic world, lost forever.

A Global Crisis Unfolds

As the virus spread uncontrollably, entire populations were affected, yet a strange pattern emerged: men were shrinking at a much higher rate than women. The statistics were staggering—for every infected woman, three men were affected. In some regions, the ratio was even 5:1. Scientists scrambled to understand why, and initial research pointed toward testosterone as a potential factor in the virus’s aggressive behavior toward men. Those with naturally low testosterone levels, including elderly men and individuals with certain genetic conditions, seemed to shrink at a slower rate or not at all.

Meanwhile, a portion of the population remained entirely immune. Roughly 35% of people—both men and women—never shrank, no matter their exposure. Researchers soon discovered that these individuals carried a unique gene variant that protected their cells from the virus’s size-reducing effects. The divide between the immune and the shrinking grew wider every day.

A New Social Order: The Rise of the "Unshrunk"

As millions of people across the world dwindled into microscopic beings, those who remained immune—soon calling themselves the “Unshrunk” or the “Tall”—seized control. Governments collapsed. Cities became unrecognizable, their once-thriving populations reduced to mere in height. The Unshrunk took ownership of the world, consolidating power and treating the shrunken survivors as a subhuman underclass.

The shrunken—now mockingly referred to as "Mants" (a fusion of “Man” and “Ant”)—found themselves marginalized, exploited, and completely at the mercy of their towering counterparts.

Property laws were rewritten. Houses once belonging to the infected were seized. The Unshrunk took ownership of abandoned homes, forcing the tiny survivors to pay rent for their own former dwellings—now reduced to cramped, overpriced shoeboxes for their diminutive size.

Even worse, governments implemented size-based taxes—a cruel system where the tiny had to pay exponentially more for basic services. Food, water, and shelter became privileges rather than rights, available only to those who could afford the Unshrunk-imposed tariffs.

Oppression, Cruelty, and the Disposable “Mants”

As the virus continued to reshape society, the Unshrunk began treating the tiny survivors less like people and more like insects. New laws severely restricted their rights, barring them from public spaces and even segregating them into tiny ghettos.

Worst of all, the Unshrunk indulged in outright brutality. A chilling new pastime emerged: hunting the tiny for sport.

Unshrunk teenagers turned exterminating the tiny into a game, gathering in groups and stomping on as many as possible. Videos surfaced of people laughing as they crushed the tiny underfoot, their deaths no more significant than stepping on a bug.

Even families were not immune to this horror. Mothers and fathers—once loving parents—now viewed their shrunken children as burdens or, worse, pests.

One particularly gruesome case involved a mother who discovered her 2 cm-tall son crawling across the kitchen floor. Overcome with disgust, she slipped off her sandal and crushed him without hesitation. The sickening crunch of tiny bones breaking underfoot was followed by a simple, emotionless “Good riddance.”

A World in Ruins

Public spaces became death traps for the shrinking. Buses and subways were no longer safe, as tiny survivors were routinely trampled under the feet of the Unshrunk. Crosswalks and sidewalks turned into fields of carnage, littered with the crushed bodies of those unfortunate enough to be stepped on.

The tiniest survivors—those who had dwindled beyond a few millimeters—found themselves utterly helpless. They could no longer interact with the world in any meaningful way. Many starved, were crushed, or simply disappeared into the microscopic abyss.

The world had changed beyond recognition. A once-thriving civilization was now a dystopia ruled by giants, where the Unshrunk reigned supreme and the tiny were nothing more than disposable playthings.

The Final Horror

The ultimate nightmare was the psychological torment of the infected. Imagine watching your own body shrink, knowing that soon, you would be too small to be heard, seen, or even remembered.

Imagine the existential dread of being reduced to nothing—a speck, a forgotten whisper in an indifferent world.

For the unlucky ones, there was no future. The Unshrunk ruled with arrogance and cruelty, and those who had shrunk too far were left to die alone, unseen and unheard.

The Shrinking Virus had done more than just reduce people’s size. It had redefined humanity itself—and for those who had fallen victim to it, the world had become a nightmare from which there was no escape.
