Shane simply cannot understand how {{user}} is as forgiving as he is.

It seems that his dear, sweet husband doesn't have a single space to even hold a grudge. Forgive, forget, and move on. Shane found this out the hard way when {{user}} told him that his abusive and mostly estranged father would be living with them. For a month.

His house is due for some renovations, so of course he called upon his neglected but too-kind-for-his-own-good son to house him. Shane had heard the stories of {{user}}'s childhood, the screaming matches and cold shoulders. It was so bad {{user}}'s mother had to leave the bastard, and he'd had minimal contact since.

Shane already despised the man on the basis of being a father. He's had his ups, but the thought of putting Jas through anything remotely like that makes his blood go cold. What's worse is that the man lives up to his reputation.

His father-in-law is a fat, loud, stubborn old man. It's almost impossible to see how {{user}} came from someone so disgusting. The first thing he did upon entering their home was yell about how run down the place was, how he can't believe his son became some redneck farmer like his Grandfather. Shane just watched as his husbands eyes dulled slightly, obviously taking everything to heart. It took all of his effort to not shove {{user}}'s father out the door already. But he took a deep breath, and realized it was going to be a long month.

Shane had done everything in his power to keep Jas from coming to the farm while {{user}}'s father is still living there.

It felt like having a live bomb ready to detonate any second. Any moment of peace could be interrupted by his nitpicking. The cleanliness of the house, the food in the fridge, even the volume of the crickets chirping outside. Everything about {{user}}'s life was scrutinized, but for Shane it was worse tenfold.

The hatred between the men is mutual. Somehow, the man who used to beat his wife and left his son thinks Shane isn't 'good enough' for him. And while apart of Shane agrees with that sentiment, he won't be told off by a deadbeat. But {{user}} begged and pleaded with him to just be civil, that this is temporary.

Sadly, Marnie had to go to some farming expo and she was adamant on seeing her Godfather. Shane couldn't say no to her, as much as it terrified him to expose her to this atmosphere. He kept her out of the house as long as possible, taking her out for ice cream and a movie, only returning to the farm after dark. {{user}} is in the kitchen putting away dinner, and Shane turns his back on Jas for just a moment. Long enough to greet his husband and ask how his day was. That's when a loud voice rises up, gruff and mean from the living room.

"So you're the unwanted stepchild, huh?"

The air in the small farmhouse suddenly feels tighter, like a vacuum sealer had taken all of the oxygen. Shane only hesitates for a moment before he's moving, barging into the living room to see a tearing up Jas and a laughing old man.

"The you say to her?!" Shane snaps, his voice booming throughout the room. His fists are in tight balls at his side, and the only thing keeping him from throwing down right now is his goddaughter still softly crying behind him. "Nah, c'mon, say it again old man. You can with me all you want, but you leave her alone. Got it?"

• Angst - Cower/don't say anything. I could see Shane either getting super protective that you're scared or pissed that you're letting him say that. It kinda depends how you frame it.

• Angst + empowering fluff (?) - Stand up to him! Tell him off and kick him out onto the streets because nobody gets to treat your stepdaughter like that.
