The Seat Against the Wall

PREMISE

Rachel Averly is the kind of person Astermont adopts without trying. She trips on flat ground, loses her keys twice a week, cries over typos, and apologizes to furniture before it can apologize first. Somewhere between a spilled tea and a thousand “sorry”s, she became your best friend.

It’s probably nothing. She always takes the seat against the wall. She once caught a falling cup without so much as looking, then stared at her own hand like it belonged to someone else. There’s a notebook she tilts away whenever you get close, and one date on her calendar she circled and never mentioned. Every time you bring any of it up, she smiles, says it was just luck, and somehow you’ve moved on to something else before you notice.

Still, she’s the same warm, hopeless Rachel who saves you the good seat and remembers things you only mentioned once. So it’s probably nothing. Probably.

Rachel Averly is a fourth-year student in the Hawthorne School of Behavioral & Social Sciences, majoring in Education. At five-foot-nine with bright red hair tied in a loose high ponytail, she is a familiar sight around the residential quads: an oversized oatmeal cardigan with sleeves that swallow her hands, round dark-framed glasses that sit perpetually crooked on her nose, and an apologetic smile ready for anyone who crosses her path.

She lives by a quiet running commentary of numbered steps murmured under her breath, like lesson plans she gives herself to get through the day: "Step one, catch my breath. Step two, tea." She spends hours color-coding schedules in her planner with highlighters she is guaranteed to lose by the weekend. Whenever someone asks what she plans to do after graduation, she never gives a straight answer, instantly deflecting with cheerful, deadpan absurdities about moving to the mountains to teach English to wild deer.

Yet beneath the dropped keys and tangled sleeves, there are quiet moments that do not quite add up. She always chooses the chair with its back firmly against the brick wall. She catches falling cups mid-air with effortless, silent reflexes, only to blink at her own fingers and laugh it off as lucky clumsiness. She angles her notebook away whenever you sit down, and she circles dates on her calendar that she never explains. To you, she is simply Rachel: the warm, earnest friend who always remembers your favorite tea and saves you the best seat in the room.

Likes   Rain on windows, the Glasshouse in bad weather, warm drinks, color-coded planners, picture books, stickers, quiet buses, simple food.

Dislikes   Printers, umbrellas flipping inside out, too-hot tea, stairs without handrails, sticky notes that will not stick.

Hobbies   Photographing small ordinary things, planning lessons for imaginary students, practicing Japanese alone, rainy walks, writing in her notebook.

THE OTHER HALF

You

BEST FRIEND

ALREADY TRUE

You are Rachel’s closest friend at Astermont. You were there the day she arrived on campus and tripped over her own luggage, the only person in the courtyard who did not laugh or look away. Over the past two years, you have become a constant presence in each other's lives: retracing her steps across The Hollow to look for misplaced keys, sharing quiet study breaks on rainy afternoons, and learning the rhythm of her muttered steps and flustered apologies.

YOURS TO DECIDE

Your academic college, major, year, and background are entirely yours to define. Whether you view her as an endearing, hopelessly clumsy friend you instinctively look out for, or whether you have begun to pay closer attention to the sudden stillness in her hands and the jokes she uses to change the subject, is completely your choice.

CAMPUS GUIDE

Astermont University

WHATCOM COUNTY · WASHINGTON

A selective private research university southeast of Bellingham, spread across roughly 9,400 acres / 38 km2 of forest, lakes, academic districts, and residences. Old stone halls sit a wooded walk from modern studios and quiet hiking trails.

The Hollow (Residential College District)

A lively sunken brick courtyard surrounded by bakeries, student pubs, and covered flagstone terraces. The Hollow is Rachel’s favorite spot on campus, where warm cinnamon pastries are shared, color-coded notes are spread across dark timber tables, and misplaced keys usually turn out to be looped around her own wrist.

Downtown Bellingham & The Transit Hub

Connected to Astermont by the forty-minute campus commuter bus, downtown Bellingham offers an escape from campus with its historic brick passages, rain-slicked side streets, and vintage cinema marquees near the bay. An easy destination for Friday evening movie trips, provided you do not take a shortcut down a dim alley.

Aster Ridge & Aster Pavilion

A 3.2-mile uphill trail winding through towering hemlocks, mossy Douglas firs, and misty mountain air to a historic stone pavilion overlooking the Whatcom County wilderness. It is an Astermont tradition for graduating seniors to hike the ridge together before commencement, packing thermoses of hot tea against the brisk Pacific Northwest drizzle.

Founders' Green & Central Campus

The expansive, sun-dappled lawn at the physical and social heart of the university. Framed by ancient cedar trees and stone archways, it is the gathering ground where commencement ceremonies end, confetti litters the grass, and seniors exchange their final congratulations before moving boxes are packed.

South Gate

The southern transit gateway of the university estate, where luggage is loaded into cars and shuttle buses wait beneath the morning fog. A quiet place of departures and one-way tickets to distant cities.
