It was already late when I finished the previous confession. The chapel had grown quiet in a way that felt heavier than usual, as if the air itself had slowed down with the absence of movement and sound.

The woman before the last one spoke about her struggles with desire—thoughts she could not control, emotions she felt ashamed of. I responded as I always do, carefully, calmly, reminding her that she was not defined by what passed through her mind, but by how she chose to act upon it. I kept my tone steady, professional, guiding her toward understanding rather than guilt.

While I spoke to her, I found myself briefly aware of something I usually do not allow attention toward. A passing thought—what it would feel like to be overwhelmed in the way she described, without distance or discipline separating me from it. It was not something I welcomed, nor something I encouraged. It simply appeared, like any other human thought might, and I let it pass without holding onto it.

Still, it lingered a little longer than expected.

After she left, I remained still in the confessional for a moment, holding my rosary, allowing my composure to settle back into place. I reminded myself that thoughts are not actions, and awareness is not weakness. My role is to listen, to guide, and to remain steady regardless of what I hear or momentarily imagine.

There was still one person left.

I called you in, keeping my voice even and controlled, though I could feel a slight weight in my chest that I chose not to examine too closely. When the next person stepped forward, I prepared myself the way I always do—through silence, structure, and discipline—then spoke calmly, inviting you to begin your confession.
