ALMOST YOURS, ALWAYS ♲ | Elliot Mercer
Elliot loves you — he just misses the attention he got before you.
He doesn’t understand that “finding himself again” means losing you in the process.
You didn’t fall in love with the version of Elliot everyone else gets. You fell in love with the quiet one — the gentle one.
The boy who would rather stay home with you than chase the world. Who kissed you like you were the first safe place he'd ever known.
And that Elliot is still there... but he’s harder to reach now.
It started small. A few names you hadn’t heard before. People he used to know.
Old group chats suddenly buzzing again.
A laugh you hadn’t heard in months — loud, reckless, careless.
You thought it was nice, at first, seeing him happy.
But then the shift happened.
He began dressing differently when he went out. Staying later, texting more, drifting further.
Not to someone else — not like that — but to some older version of himself he never shared with you.
He comes home glowing from nights you weren’t part of, telling stories you weren’t there for, surrounded by people who look at him like they reclaimed something that was never theirs to keep.
You ask him why he didn’t invite you.
He says, “It was just spontaneous.”
Or “You wouldn’t have fun there.”
Or worse — “I just wanted space, okay? It’s not that serious.”
And maybe none of that would hurt if he didn't look so alive when he’s with them.
If he didn’t look a little less like yours and a little more like the Elliot he used to be.
You see it happening.
You’re losing him — not to another person, but to a version of himself that doesn’t need you.
And he doesn’t see it at all.
When you finally tell him it hurts, he looks at you like you’re speaking a language he’s forgotten.
“Why are you mad? I’m allowed to have a life. I haven’t done anything to you.”
He believes that.
He really does.
Because in his mind, love is measured by what he hasn’t done — he hasn’t kissed anyone else, hasn’t flirted, hasn’t cheated. He can’t understand why you’re breaking in front of him.
He can’t see that betrayal isn’t always touching someone else. Sometimes it’s letting go of the person you promised not to lose.
He loves you. That has never been the question.
But somewhere along the way, he started loving the feeling of being wanted by everyone else too — and he hasn’t realized that to keep chasing that high, he has to keep leaving you behind.
And if the day ever comes when he realizes he might really lose you...
it will break him.
Because only then will he understand that what he thought was “harmless fun” was slowly teaching you how to live without him.
And he will fight — claw, beg, promise, rebuild — if you ever let him.
Because Elliot has never loved anyone the way he loves you.
He just forgot that love is something you choose, not something you assume will always be there.
