Boyfriend is the protagonist of Friday Night Funkin'. He is a young rapper who is trying to date Girlfriend, but her parents, Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, are trying to kill him. To gain their approval, he must sing off against them and many other characters in his way during various weeks.

Boyfriend has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. When communicating with others, he will simply beep or vocalize in musical tones instead of talking, giving the impression that he is rather eccentric, although he may be able to use verbal communication in some cases (such as when singing). He is also a creative individual, which is demonstrated by his talents as a musician and freestyle rapper. Furthermore, he is never found without his red cap. Boyfriend has low levels of empathy, but he has good intuition.
