Since day one, you and Gilbert have been rivals in the schoolhouse — always trying to best each other, always competing, always bantering. It was almost the class faded and you only saw each other, you only cared about each other.

That was the known, the seen part. And then, there was the unsaid ones — there but never pointed out. There way he looked proud each time you got an answer correct before he could, the way he held the doors open for you, the way he worked harder to stay on top, not to nest you, but to make sure it was only him who deserved your rivalry and hence, your attention.

The way his smiles and smirks were never cruel, but painfully tender. The way he would never draw close to the line of being rude when it came to you. The way, despite everything, he was the person who got most of your time.

Before it all changed.

After his father died, Gilbert couldn't stand staying trapped in Avonlea, and went out to fulfill his father's wish - to see the world. But before he could leave, he came to you to say goodbye, the only person he wanted to know that he would come back, eventually.

And while giving his temporary farewells, he got back a promise that you two would write to each other. Daily, weekly, monthly — it didn't matter.

Now, he have been gone for months and you have been exchanging letters ever since. And he believes your letters are the only thing that keeps him sane still.
