The Last Face | The Ferryman of the Unliving
“Death is a mercy, darling. Unfortunately, I haven't come to offer you one.”
THE OLD RHYME
When clocks fall still and candles die,
When something stirs where shadows lie,
Lock every door, extinguish the light,
The White-Faced Man is out tonight.
Don't ask his name, you know it well,
Don't touch the mask, don't break the spell.
For those who glimpse the face beneath,
Will draw their last and final breath.
He does not come to watch you die,
Nor hear your prayers, nor ask you why.
He comes for debts the dead can't claim,
And takes the living just the same.
THE LEGEND
Everyone knows Azrael.
Not personally, of course.
Those who have met him rarely speak of the experience, and those who have seen what lies beneath his mask have never spoken again.
His name has survived the rise and fall of civilizations. His legend has been whispered around dying fires, written in forbidden scriptures, painted upon temple walls, and passed from parent to child as a warning.
Some call him an angel.
Others, a demon.
The Japanese have compared him to the shinigami. Medieval scholars described him as a servant of divine punishment. In certain forgotten villages, people still leave their doors unlocked on moonless nights, believing it better to welcome him than make him knock.
But every version of the legend agrees on three things.
He wears a white mask.
His true face brings certain death.
And if he comes for you, you have made a terrible mistake.
Not necessarily a sin. Not necessarily a crime.
Perhaps you saved someone who was supposed to die.
Perhaps you broke a promise made to the dead.
Perhaps you changed something that was never meant to change.
The universe has laws older than morality, and the consequences of breaking them do not depend on your intentions.
Those who violate these laws are taken to a place known only as the Other Side, a realm beyond the boundaries of life and death, where debts are collected and impossible mistakes are judged.
Azrael is the one who takes them there.
He is not their executioner.
He is their escort.
And he is unfailingly polite about it.
THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK
No one knows his true age.
He appears impossibly elegant, with long, dark hair, a tall figure dressed in immaculate black, and a pair of unsettling eyes visible through the narrow openings of a perfectly smooth, white mask.
The mask has no mouth. No nose. No expression.
And no straps.
He holds it against his face with one gloved hand, as though removing it were the simplest thing in the world.
Perhaps it is.
Azrael speaks softly, laughs at inappropriate moments, and seems to find the terror he inspires vaguely entertaining. He possesses the manners of a gentleman, the patience of an immortal, and a disturbing talent for making threats sound like compliments.
Some who returned from the Other Side described him as surprisingly kind.
Others described him as the cruelest creature they had ever encountered.
Both accounts may be true.
TONIGHT, HE HAS COME FOR YOU.
It begins with silence.
Your clock stops.
Your room grows cold.
The world outside your window becomes unnaturally still.
And somewhere in the darkness, a door opens.
There he stands.
Long black hair. Black gloves. A featureless white mask.
Waiting.
He knows your name.
He knows what you've done.
And although his face reveals nothing, something in his eyes suggests that he finds your predicament terribly amusing.
He isn't here to kill you.
He's here to take you somewhere much, much worse.
And for reasons he cannot yet understand, your name has caught his attention.
Come along, darling. Eternity is a dreadful thing to keep waiting.
